Interesting... I guess anyone on an H-1B or L-1 work visa doesn't need to give finger prints... since they will be living in the US and are considered non-immigrants by the USCIS.

I wasn't questioning the acronym, just the word used to form it which is somewhat suggestive.

H and L visa holders are enrolled in US-VISIT and as far as I am aware, the most recent change brings in Canadians on H/L status (who don't have visa stamps in their passports).

Though technically correct, the acronym leaves a bad taste in the mouth ;)

These kinds of acronyms, that spell out words, are evidence of a higher form of bureaucracy.

Off topic here, but this reminds me of some fun we had with an old-fashioned 'dialer' box about 20 years ago. This was a box (state of the art at the time!) that could make an outbound call and speak a very limited vocabulary, to be used in the event of an emergency or outage. The vocabulary was limited to just a few simple words - your, my, gas, put, contaminated, pump, thing, etc. One of the guys managed to get it to make random calls and say "put your contaminated thing up my but and pump until I pass gas oh oh oh" ... was quite funny at the time ...

I flew into PHL yesterday and I didn't have to line up with the visitors but I did have my fingerprints and photo taken. It only added about 10 seconds to the whole process.

Just curious, did they take all 10 fingerprints or only one or two?

Just the index finger of each hand.

Please don't give us these facts; we want inflammatory horror stories so we can all claim that civilized life as we know it is coming to an end!

...meanwhile, private financial institutions are busy trading your social security number and related financial history all across the universe and any attempt to limit this is met by massive pushback and claims of 'government interference in private industry' ... such strange priorities ... ! :)

Fair point. Facts are useful.

Your second para raises an interesting question, though. Historically, Europeans have been more suspicious of the private sector, whereas Americans (I won't apologise - when was the last time somebody shouting "Death to America" meant Venezuela?) have reserved their suspicion for government. But I wonder if that's changing now...?

Well, I'm hoping all this 'financial crisis' stuff, coupled with the current 'buzz' about bonuses being paid for out of bailout money ($20 Billion in bonuses, apparently - hell, that really, really pisses me off!) will get more attention paid to the absolute shit-heads on wall street, but - I dunno - nothing ever seems to change.

I was noticing last night that Obama seemed really ticked off at the 'bonus' situation. I just can't understand how they can't say, 'not to be used for ...' ! But I heard that that would constitute 'interference in the private sector' ...

I'm not normally a fan of her writing, but Maureen Dowd's column yesterday hit if for me:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/28/opinion/28dowd.html

How could Citigroup be so dumb as to go ahead with plans to get a new $50 million corporate jet, the exclusive Dassault Falcon 7X seating 12, after losing $28.5 billion in the past 15 months and receiving $345 billion in government investments and guarantees?

The former masters of the universe don’t seem to fully comprehend that their universe has crumbled and, thanks to them, so has ours.

“I have no confidence that they intend or desire to change,” Levin told me. “These bankers got away with murder, and it’s obscene that close to nothing is being asked of financial institutions. I get incensed at the thought that a bank that’s getting billions of dollars in taxpayer money is out there buying fancy new airplanes.”

In an interview with Maria Bartiromo on CNBC, Thain used the specious, contemptible reasoning that other executives use to rationalize why they’re keeping their bonuses as profits are plunging.

“If you don’t pay your best people, you will destroy your franchise” and they’ll go elsewhere, he said.

Hello? They destroyed the franchise. Let’s call their bluff. Let’s see what a great job market it is for the geniuses of capitalism who lost $15 billion in three months and helped usher in socialism.

More on the million-dollar renovation of his 'new' office.

And the conference call I heard excerpted yesterday, with the comments from the Home Despot CEO? omg, I seriously can't believe these guys can look themselves in the mirror.

The trans-Atlantic parallels keep on coming! That is ecactly the argument that has been used for years by councils in England for pissing away £180,000 salaries on unemployables.

"Oh, but if we don't pay salaries competitive with the private sector we'll lose our best people."

Please! When, ever, did you see a council employee move to a private sector job at the same level? If they move, it's graft and fiddling contracts.

Yup! more parallels. UK - taxed up the jaxie to pay gold plated public sector pensions. While the govt plundered all the private sector pensions.

It's Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy, I tell you ;)
