Cool, the Wegmans is OK. I have only been over there a couple times, so can't compare it to any others. Last time I was over there was to buy some Colemans mustard for my pregnant (US citizen) wife who got used to the taste when we lived in the UK. If you do go to the Wegmans, look across from the traffic lights at Waxpool road (when leaving Wegmans) and I work in the office directly opposite.

Don't know if you know but there is also a small shop on Rt 50 called "The British Pantry & Cafe" (it's near to Aldie, before you get to Gilberts Corner if you are going west on Rt 50). They have a huge amount of food from home, and at the side is a small tea room/cafe sort of thing. Out the front is a red telephone box, so it makes it a little easier to spot. It's sort of in the middle of nowhere though (we found it by chance).

I think there is also a World Market just up the road from here somewhere.

Thanks for all thopse local treasure tips! I want to check out the British pantry and cafe now! I think there is a World Market on Route 7 not that far from here, but depending on which direction you are from Dulles that might not be too good for you. I will give a little wave in your direction when I go to Wegmans...so if you see a freak in the street you will know it's me

One of the biggest problems you are faced with is having no credit score, and that means everything out here, you can't fart without one, the higher it is the louder you can fart .

I have to say the US HSBC were a lifeline for us. We live in AZ but our branch is in NY, our premier account manager there was a godsend, she helped us out with so much stuff.

We do all our banking online, we have never had a problem with them and to top it, they refund all atm withdrawal charges (most banks charge you if you don't use there atms).

Anyway good lunch with everything. Where are you moving to??
I actually went ahead and did this prior to leaving, and then - not 3 months later - the bar stewards wrote to me saying they were changing the Ts&Cs and would be charging me a monthly (was it 15 quid?) fee if I didn't keep a certain amount with them! (Which was no good as I'd brought most of my money with me). LUCKILY I'd kept my regular HSBC account open on the mainland so I told the Premier people to shove it.

We're moving to Arizona - miles from anywhere, so online banking is going to be a must!
How difficult is it to open US account once I get over there? (Husband is US citizen but he let his bank account go when he was living here).
We went round a few banks on arrival - most wouldn't touch us without an SSN but then we found one that didn't care and they opened accounts for us there and then. And they got our mortgage business because of it. Shop around.

I had intended to bring my computer with me. Would I be better perhaps to just bring the hard disk and have that put into a new computer over there rather than ship this lot? Any ideas?

It would mean I could keep online until the day we actually leave!!!
Definitely bring more chocolate! Its the one thing my husband craves like mad! RE: PC, make sure your tower-thingy's power supply box has a switch on it that makes it compatible with US electricity. You have to open up the tower and there will be a metal box inside, and if the box doesnt have a little switch (its sort of hidden) you'll have to buy one when you get here, which is kinda a pain. Most power supplies have the switch, but of course ,ours didnt!

naa...the red tab, that's on the back of the puter, no need to open it..and most puters in the EU will have dual power...it's a doddle to replace the PSU if it doesn't though.
