Unless you are looking for a job that directly follows on from your degree pick the Ivy League school every time for the impact on your resume and the chance to network whilst at college.

I didn't post the link for recruiters to look at.

A child should choose a uni he is comfortable with. If he is unhappy he will not do well.

What are your thought guys on education here? Is there a difference if one came from Ivy league or from a top ranked colleges?[/QUOTE]

My eldest son graduated in May from Cornell. We live in Atlanta and they love to have kids come in from the South. Top notch academics. He had his pick of Law schools having taken his LSAT there and at home in the summer. He was ready to go to Fordham in NYC but at the 11th hour he got a great scholarship offer from Emory so he came home.Has his own place, his own loan etc. IMO , Ivy League all the way.Remember, its a marathon not a. sprint

The thing with state schools, if your eligible for any scholarships and what not's they will be counted against anything you get offered from the school, so if they offered you a sports bursary for instance, and you got some from work, they would minus that from what they offered.

You go private, they won't do that, so anything they offer you and you can bring in will go against the cost...and depending on where you go, can get a better work study job going private.

Depends on the field of study...if your science based, ivy league could help you get into other programs, but top ranked will also help you get into better research places....bit like most things really.

As for ivy league, it won't have much impact abroad, well unless it's really up there, but then ivy league would probably be more known than a top rated uni.

Over here, most wouldn't have a clue about any uni unless it was either OxBridge....hell, my uni, in the field it's known for was constantly top 2 in europe, over here, only one person had heard of it, only because his daughter was going out with someone that went there.

All things being equal, your kid will likely have a better pedigree for his/her resume and a superior alumni network from an Ivy League school (sounds as if your kid got into Dartmouth?), than from a state school. That will help with getting hired, particularly in those first jobs that can be critical to providing a career path that is on track for the highest echelons of Corporate America.

That being said, the very best of the state schools can provide a superior pedigree, but they do generally fall short with the alumni network. (For example, UC Berkeley is going to get plaudits from just about anyone.) But these are the exceptions, not the rule.

In part, this could be determined by what your kid intends to do after graduation. If the track calls for graduate school immediately after undergraduate (law school, med school, etc.), then the state school may be more than adequate if it can get your kid into a great grad program, the latter of which counts more heavily on the resume. But if not, the Ivy may have the edge.
