Ivy league or Private or State universities?

My son is choosing between two colleges in CA. One is private and one is public. Both are nationally ranked in top 15 colleges.

One Ivy league college has also express interest in him but he does not want to go because its setting is in the east coast in a rural area.

I told him to choose Ivy league school instead since we will be paying almost the same amount of tuition with the out of state colleges.

What are your thought guys on education here? Is there a difference if one came from Ivy league or from a top ranked colleges?

it's not what you know, it's who you know.

Take a look at the following...it is supposed to be a neutral list of university rankings worldwide. (Press the cancel button when the box appears...there's no need to install.)

My thought on education here is that its piggin' expensive. Being as it sounds like you are well heeled, then of course private and Ivy league is the way to go. Alumni is a big thing here as Manc says, and if you graduate from Harvard/Princeton etc, its highly unlikely that you'll ever be out of work or in a low paid job for long.

Has your son visited those colleges? Which one does he feel more comfortable with?

But how can he be choosing this early? AFAIK, applications are not due until the end of November, and decisions will not be announced for a few months yet (not until March, for UC schools).

Be that as it may, there is not point in going to a school which is a poor fit.

You can apply for early application. Students apply at the beginning of senior year...an offer is made before Christmas. My daughter's school encouraged all the students to apply early.

Very true...my daughter's friend tried to commit suicide last week...due to her inability to cope with the pressure of work.

That only works with the private schools. The University of California does not announce decisions until March. Berkeley is particularly perverse in that they wait till midnight on March 31  (I am guessing that's the public shcool the OP is referring to, or possibly UCLA...)

U of T announce in June/July. We told them she needed to know early because of other offers...they offered her a place just after Christmas. It can be done if they want a particular student.

It's a little more balanced than the US version of the top 100 universities worldwide.

Doesn't it also depend on what you want to study?

Do you think recruiters for jobs after college read those stats ??
Unless you are looking for a job that directly follows on from your degree pick the Ivy League school every time for the impact on your resume and the chance to network whilst at college.
