Tony Bleurgh is not doing anything to discourage this misapprehension. I think it's more of a trying to sound smart....like I think it goes like this: Blah blah (in an english accent)... they hear it, and think "hmm...they're not from here...ENGLAND! - But if I say that, and they're not from there, they'll think i'm stupid...so I'll say something that will make me sound cultured, and educated." "are you from Australia? South Africa?" (hmm...what other countries speak with an accent??? how can i sound like I know what i'm talking about!?? oh well...that's good enough, I don't want to sounds like a show off... "I'm acctually from york (or whatever)" |

This fascinates me! I am moving to the UK from Canada next year and just basically messing around on the boards, seeing what people miss, and what they find different. When someone doesn't understand you when you say tomato or water or whatever....what do you say? I think the conversation would go like: "Could I have some toe-mate-o juice please?" "What?" "Toe-mate-o juice....um...they are vegetables, red, like an apple...when combined with clams they make Clamato juice, um...you use them to make ketchup & spagetti sauce...??" "ohhh...toe-mat-o juice, yeah, sure" I'm interesting to see if eveyone will know what I'm talking about when I move - I would expect it to be quite simple, but maybe it wont. |

Everyone thinks its vegetable, but you're right it is a fruit. Didnt they all think it was poisonous until Victorian times? My accent is sadly inbetween English and yank. Some people say it hasnt changed buit others tell me its changed. On pronunciation, well I'm English so I speak English. They got US English from the "mother country" so they should know waht I'm talking about. Yep stubborn as a mule. |
