:o yeah sadly i have succumbed after all i've been around them for 20+ yrs so it's just kind of crept in....i tend to only use it when i'm with the outlaws....and most certainly never when home in the uk lol they'd think i'd definitely gone awol  :p |
Re: Hows your accent?
LOL...it sounds like "y'all" has definitely crept in!
What about stuff like "Vite-a-min" instead of "Vitt-a-main" or "To-may-to" rather than "to-mart-to"? I've switched all those words simply because it was easier to communicate (avoiding the "Huh?" stage). I also ask for a kleenex rather than a tissue and other funny little things. It just sort of happened. |

I know for a fact that the way i speak here in Illinois is different than back in UK, the same thing happened to a lesser degree in NZ, i have not developed an American accent, but i have slowed down and made my words clearer and will use duifferent words. I know most people locally havent heard a lancs accent. I am in effect making an effort to make myself understood by others. This is often most useful when i speak to primarily spanish speakers. The first week i ever visited the USA i went to a real ma and pa burrito bar, the guy in there simply could not understand me when i asked for a pork burrito, I eventually just had to point. he could understand English well enough but my accent threw him totally. I quickly learned what was easily understood and not. Believe you me i am not the kind of guy who goes to Spain demanding 'warburtons' bread and throws on a thick accent at the locals!! Thats just plain rude. bugman. |

It was typical to pronounce "run" as "urn", to use "ee" instead of "you", and "I" instead of "me". Also "f" tended to be pronounce as "v". |

I have a "Mid-Atlantic" accent. My consonents and vowels are still as they were, but I now emphasise different syllables, and use different word selection, i.e. garage instead of garage and I ask, "Do you have any....", instead of, "Have you got any...".
The result is that I sound English to Americans, and American to English people. Having said that, on my few trips back there, I lose the American part very quickly. I think that I have moved more to the English side, since I found these expat boards and been in contact with school friends from West Kensington Secondary Central School, class of 1951, via FR, and it has affected the way I speak. |
