Magic

I squealed when they said those koala bear Ewok things were the Furlings.

I won't let my OH delete it from our DVR so I can watch it again. And again.

Did you know that Sci Fi have cancelled future series of SG1 though? They're just going with Atlantis after series 11.

Didn't know they were cancelling it. Wonder how long Atlantis will last standalone.

Re: Hows your accent?

god my accents all over the place!!

my kids speak with this weird quasi brit/west indian accent as I do. very odd and when I come back to the UK everyone bashes me about it. My mum especially doesnt want my kids gorwing up with "Rango" accents...

I did try to explain that having never lived in the UK they are pretty unlikey to grow up with a queens english accent!

problem here is the grammar too -
"de house by me" - our house
"we come pass you by" - we're coming to see you

and "th" doesnt exist here at all - its a with a "d" like "dis and dat" - my folks especially love that one!! :D

[QUOTE=cinnabar]Kiwis say their "e"s like "i"s, so "put the pen on the bed" would be "put the pin on the bid". QUOTE]

Thats a useful one to know - must remember to add that to me phrasebook ;)

Been here 4 years, and dont think my accent has changed much at all - the way I talk has, but not my accent. Probably because, like someone else said, I dont work here, so dont have the same exposure as some folk do. In fact, apart from checkout staff, the coffee shop, and the bank, most of my interaction is actually with foreigners! Wifes family are Chinese, eldest sons playgroup are Norwegian, Dutch, English and Scottish, 2nd sons are mainly North American, but from all over the US & Canada, so no consistent accent group, and daughters group are a mix of scottish, Norwegian and American. Plus none of our neighbours are local locals, so really, its hard to see which direction my accent would go in. Mongrel I guess!

Went to visit my new (very young) doctor today. He asked me if I was English because he could detect a very slight accent. So obviously I am slowly losing my lovely northern accent.

pmsl!! hey it's not fake...I hope I don't have an American accent but I know it's changed and I do say American words..but your post is funny cos before I moved to the U.S,actually before I met hubby I met a girl from England who'd worked as a nanny for an American family for years..I thought the way she changed to U.S words was awful...I'll never do that I thought....you live and learn :p :D

Maybe the Southern Hemisphere types sound alike to me? :D

We got a Brit contract French teacher in my O Level year and I recall him being puzzled by our accent. It is a Zimbabwean accent, which is different from a S.A. accent - more Brit in it, with a twist of Australian. Weirdly enough, only one person has ever picked up on the fact that my dh and I have diff accents.

I know I am worried about getting one that's why I am trying to be adamant, but as I don't know any scots here and my family are irish -have no idea what I will end up sounding like! :(
But I do use US words spoken with a UK accent. (It's really bad can't remember now what is a UK or US word  )

Re: Hows your accent?

I had to change the way I talked moving out of Bistol City centre to the sticks less than 15 miles away...when I was 13...

We've been here 7 years nearly..here being Cape Cod MA...I hate the accent...you'll never get me to pick it up no matter how long I live here...move me to TX and I'd be speaking like a native in under 2 weeks....
Round here I'm the posh English lady...they don't meet many Brits in this part of the world...
I can't tell if its my son on the phone or one of his friends..he is the most American of us all...
Daughter still sounds the same after working here with Americans for 5 years...everyone thinks she is Irish....I put that down to the fact that everyone here is Irish...or so they say or think...
My husbands accent is still the same....that is down too working with mostly Indians...Arabs...and Eastern Europeans...he does sound very sexy over the phone...then he comes home... :D

Re: Hows your accent?

Accents aside, has anyone found any American words or phrases creeping into their vocabulary? Have any ExPats in Texas uttered a "Y'all" yet?

Re: Hows your accent?

I've got so used the saying schedule the American way (as in skedule), I started to doubt myself and wonder if I was just still saying it the British way, cos it felt too easy. Had to ask my hubby last night how schedule is pronounced for each country cos I couldn't remember which was which.
