The wife has the thermostat set to 68 and our heating has kicked in a few times during the night the last couple of weeks.

The in-laws have a lovely wood stove and free wood supply, which helps them out a lot.

Wood has gotten pretty pricey these days too if you were buying it.

We used the heating for the first time last week. Starting to get down in the 30s at night (not every night) but this house gets chilly in the morning!

We actually cut our own, we have a lot of box elders on our five acres! Prices locally are around $50 a cord now. I suspect in the Boston area it is a wee bit higher!

Heating set to 72f during the day...75f in the evenings downstairs. It has started to kick in every evening for the last few days.

Air con set to 69f in the evenings and during the night...because I like to sleep in a cold bedroom. Although it is now chilly during the night...50s/40sf it is not cold enough to chill the bedroom down to 69f when I go to bed. Hubby is pulling his hair out because I have the air con running upstairs...whilst the heating is running downstairs.

Whoa!! I was reading in the Daily Mail that New York, Paris & London would be underwater by 2050. Now I know why the polar icecap has to go! To keep Princess JG in the style to which she's become accustomed!!!

Well that's one thing that's a LOT cheaper up your way. We don't buy wood, so no idea what prices are "normally" but my sons scout troop sell it in November and December, and their prices start at $85 a quarter cord, to $240 for a full cord delivered! They sell around 60 cords a year, and most folk seem to be repeat purchasers.

I'm confused. You have the heat set to a higher temperature than the AC?

The AC in our house is never set below 70, and usually in the 74-78 range when we're at home or 78-82 when we're out. The heating is usually set in the 64-66 range when we're at home and awake, around 60 when we're out, and around 54-55 when we're asleep. Our aggregate utility bills (electric + gas) never exceed $250 in the past 18 months. .... October-November and March-April typically involve minimal AC or heating.

If it's colder outside than you want it inside, why not just crack open some windows?

I think I'm with your husband on this...seems pretty ludicrous to be heating one floor while you're cooling another.

Our bedroom gets a lot of sun during the day...even though I keep the blinds closed when it is sunny. At the moment it is not cold enough in the evenings to cool down the bedroom enough. It is usually in the mid 70s...which means I can't sleep and if I can't sleep hubby doesn't get to sleep.

It is currently snowing, does that answer the question?

Me, holding out for as long as possible, still have windows open and need to bring in the window AC units but I'm putting it off because I can't be arsed with pulling down the storm windows and getting the caulk gun out and sealing the windows back up and all the other faff about sealing the windows up properly with draft excluder's and the like. :/
Our co-op board has authorized the use of heat since September 15th. It is still far to warm out for heat IMHO as I still have the window A/Cs in and the windows open all day and night. But the building heat is coming on in the evenings and the morning and flowing outside through my open windows.

What is surprising to me is that Hubby down in Mississippi is having the chimney inspected and a new cap put on as he is anticipating need to use the fireplace in a few months.
