Seems to be a bit manufacturer dependent. And the sales folks don't seem to understand it or realise its significance either. Whirlpool call it a "Built-In Water Heater". Nobody seems to blaze it across the front page of their advertising so you need to go and read the spec sheet. Seems to add a hundred bucks or so to the price. With the Kenmore ones (sears), look for the "t" in the designation, e.g. HE3t has a heater, HE3 doesn't.

Thanks, Woodsey and FB.

This thread couldn't have come at a better time, I'm also looking to buy a frontloader... can't believe people over here settle for those top loaders...

Yep, thanks everybody! I had no clue about the internal heater thing either, but we found a Whirlpool one at Lowes for just under 600 (cheaper than I could find it anywhere else) that has one, and they call it compact but it seems to me to be the same size as what I had at home and it has pretty good reviews so we are going to get this one at the weekend.

(597 at Lowes!)

Why do you have two washing machines?

Why ....just because I had the same problems with front loaders that people have with top.......
I find top loaders cleaner and easier to use.......I had countless problems with my front loader......no matter how little I put in ...clothes were ripped and dirty...and the machine was nearly new.........maybe no-one here knows how to use a machine of any sort and we should all come to your house and let you do it for us..........

Krizzy. You have to admit that you're in the minority back in the UK who had problems using a front loader. If front loaders in the UK generally worked the way you describe above, don't you think top loaders would be more popular (if sold in the UK at all)?

Anyway...getting back to the point........I remember coming over to the USA and using a top loader many times at hotels...........and taking back clean nice smelling clothes that reminded me of my holiday.......I could never get that clean or that smell in my front loader at home.......and I seem to get through so many machines.........which was common with friends too.......
Problems with my front loaders.
Door sticking...
Ripping clothes......
having to wash the same thing more than once....
Having to replace to often for my liking......
Having to do a hot wash to get a clean load........

Problems with my top loaders...
So far nothing.....
I now wash in a cool wash......

I think its down to having what you like.........
I know that top loaders are liked by a lot of English guests using holiday homes in the USA........we had this chat a while ago.....
If you are unhappy with your machine......I would give the front loader a go.........
