I think it was safe to change less later on when Rowling had gathered such a fan base. It wasn't safe--apparently--in the early days.
Also, it's a sad fact of publishing that when an author is new and untried, their books are edited heavily, usually with good results. As they get more of a name, they get more control over the editing process. The result is often sloppier later books that are much longer--much less edited. Think about some of the major authors you know, and ask yourself whether quality has suffered and the pagination increased over time. Isn't true in every case but holds true for many. A divergent point, but an interesting one.

I wanted to add something about J K Rowling - I read several times when the first HP book became popular, that the publisher wanted her to use the name J K Rowling and not Joanne Rowling, because they thought the book would be better received if readers thought it might be a man - so they came up with a formula similar to J R R Tolkien. I can't find references to that exact thing now but I did find this: http://www.gurl.com/showoff/spotligh...670630,00.html

Tesco's announcement last week also shed light on what sort of food Fresh & Easy will sell. Its lineup won't include British food. Tesco USA CEO Tim Mason said Fresh & Easy will "reflect 21st-century American life."

I would love to see a small food store.... nearly all of them here are dubious 7/11s or attached to a gas station and I wouldn't trust any of that food to be fresh or particularly good, even. No one likes long supermarket queues after work so if they can beat that they could charge for the convenience.
