The entirely optional "Lets say 10 nice things about Septics" thread
 

Seeing as July 4th is just around the corner (depending on which calender you use) Might it be nice to list 10 nice things about our post-colonial cousins here in this slightly oversized country? Just for a change......

Starter for 10:

1. They are quite friendly
2. They like children
3. They are interested in foreigners
4. They like English accents and its therefore easier to get laid
5. They give good service at restaurants
6. They like to discuss cars, fishing, hunting and recreation in general
7. They love/hate politics and like to complain about Government
8. They shower a lot and are pretty interested in personal hygene
9. They actually do produce some decent humour (Colbert show, Robin Williams, Jim Carey........)
10. They let off fireworks when it isn't pissing down with rain........IN THE SUMMERTIME.........duh!

Hmmm will probably repeat some of yours, and my disclaimer is this is a total generalisation based only on my experience and observations.

1. They are very friendly.
2. They are very complimentary.
3. They love kids.
4. They are patriotic (this is also one of my hates).
5. They place emphasis on family and community (more so than Brits).
6. They provide more community recreational activities.
7. They make some good movies :p
8. Ummm can't think of any more, but if I do I'll come back and add :)

2. being fat does not mean ur the odd one out!! ( a aint that bad hone
3. there are more dead animals on the roads than i see live ones in zoos back home! (a plus because half of them i cant name so probably better off dead because live they would probably scare the living hell out of me)
4 Its ok to drive around with a dead deer on ur mini metro therefore vision is impared but who the hell cares u got a dead deer !!!
5. No one gives a damn if u get dressed in the morning!! No strange looks if u go shopping in the fluffy slippers, and pjs.
6. SO many different people from different countries its actually quite nice.
7. they seem to work hard and play hard.
8. as long as ur car has four wheels u can drive it. great idea. the body work can be a bit dodgy but the wheels are important
9. they love sports. And actually go and watch them. GREAT
10. so many tv programmes i am spoilt for choice!!!

What kind of calendar do you use that has 3 months away as a "corner"??:p


1. They are very friendly.

3. They are optimists.
4. They like British accents and it's therefore easier to get laid. Worked for me when I met my wife to be.:D But not since. And that's a good thing.
5. They give good customer service everywhere.
6. They have a can do attitude.
7. They are proud of their country.
8. They invented right on red. OK, stretching it a bit now.
9. They saved our asses in Vietnam. OK, I've definitely run out.

Okay, I'll have a go...

They colonised a beautiful country (hang on - was that us?)
They instituted the division of church and state (though implementation is sadly lacking)
They are very friendly - albeit it often in a superficial sort of way
They are mostly very polite
They make some good movies
They have some of the best unis in the world
They do tons of cutting-edge research in all kinds of fields
They invented outlets
They invented the insinkorator
(Struggling now...)
Eurika: They invented the programmable coffee-maker (no idea whether they did or not, but it's the sort of thing I imagine Amerians would think of 'needing'... ;))

'Interested' good choice of word, doesn't mean they like foreigners though.
4. They like English accents and its therefore easier to get laid
5. They give good service at restaurants
That's 'cos wait staff get paid shit with usually no benefits at all so rely on tips.
6. They like to discuss cars, fishing, hunting and recreation in general
All stuff you can do on weekends, rarely will they discuss stuff you can do or places to go on a 2 week vacation ( You might as well just say "Hello, I just came down from Mars on my big purple spaceship)
7. They love/hate politics and like to complain about Government
Try saying you don't like the president (or even alluding to) with a lot of them then, I guess you like him or don't mention it in conversation.
8. They shower a lot and are pretty interested in personal hygene
Why do so many people not wash their hands after having a crap then?
9. They actually do produce some decent humour (Colbert show, Robin Williams, Jim Carey........) John Colbert or coal bear is seldom funny IMO.
10. They let off fireworks when it isn't pissing down with rain........IN THE SUMMERTIME.........duh! Maybe Mr Fawkes should have bombed parliament in June then, I'll take a massive roaring bonfire on a cold November night, burning an effigy over "Fireworks at the beach"

2. They are generous of heart... most give a lot to charity
3. They really do love kids
4. Seem to have a more laid back attitude in their approach to life
5. They are very chatty and friendly to Brits
6. The weather is awesome (and I live in Texas... yes, I love the HEAT!)
7. It's easy to shop... parking is not miles away
8. Get a lot more house/car for your money!
9. They have lots of drive-thru's!!!
10. Big fridges and beer fridges... gotta love that!

1. They are quite friendly, unless you live in SE Virginia, and there they are not
2. They make good subs
3. Cigarrettes are really cheap
4. They like English accents and say "Ooo I could listen to you all day"
5. They give good service at restaurants and the portions are huge
6. The salad bars are great
7. We have real seaons in PA not just a blur of weather passing through

3: Gas is cheap
4: Talk is cheap
5: I can be very rude and they just think Im a quirky Brit just like Simon whatshisname.
6: They are very polite....with the exception of a slight lack of the use of "Please and Thank you's".
7: They make good porn
8: Due to a large amount and a history of inbreeding there are a extraordinary number of people with less than optimum intelligence (apparently I can't call them retards)..that will do all the shit jobs in my yard very cheap.

3. Microbrews.. finally, good crafted beer readily available and so not so dependant upon tinted flavoured water.

1. Flexibility and "Can do" mentality.. for instance, changing your mind is not a terrible thing to do and you are not putting anyone out of their way if you want to return or exchange items; should you want to go back to school later in life, no hassle.

1. Most Americans generally look both ways before pulling out of the driveway, unlike New Zealand (arrggghhh :curse: )

Not having children - I'm interested in the posters that said US likes children...does the UK not?

Just for the spirit of the thread I will mention mine (again, so sorry for the repeat!)

1) Garage door openers
2) Air conditioning
3) Patriotic (though as an OP said this does wind me up
just cause we are not like that)
4) Initial friendliness
5) Variety and cheap restaurants
6) Used to be cheaper housing (but not where I live!!)
7) Abundance of car parking spaces everywhere
from libraries - shops etc
8) Usually FREE (or a lot cheaper) car parking :thumbsup:
9) Cheaper taxes (well, where I live)
10) Emphasis on family
11) How they talk to the children and discipline them
(well what I've seen)

:D Well maybe I have been fortunate in what I've seen!

Has no one seen mums asking their 6 month old child what they want? (not that they will understand but you get the gist) And in the supermarket in a soft voice to their temper filled 2 yr, if you keep this up you wont get your treat while allowing them to cry etc, then ignoring them.

And my friend in VA was disciplining her 6 yr old, but spoke to her softly and nicely, with her arm around her, led her to her bedroom explaining what she was doing and why, telling her she loved her.

While there has been the odd negative example here and I'm sure there are loads of good examples in the UK sadly I haven't see it, just the walloping of back sides and the 'I'll give you something to cry about'. And the yelling to children or being angry with them when they have done wrong.

Well as I said maybe I've just been fortunate here what I've seen or live in that type of neighbourhood!

well in the uk we dont call our dads "SIR"

my friend is like ur friend in VA - and boy is she paying for it today!!! I dont believe that having to explain my NO to a 6 year old. My kids know i love them that is why i tell them NO!

I dont agree with smacking kids in public and arguing with kids like some do. I just seem to have that "stare" which means u have gone too far now child and if u dont stop it u wont like me later!! Seems to work for me. Worked for my parents. If i ever got the stare from my dad it could stop hurricanes in thier tracks !!! And at 41 still does. !! So he must have done something right in raising me.

I find we all bring up our kids how we think best. Might be wrong but its our way!.

Very true and if I had children I would be the one that shouts etc :o

But my friend in VA was strict, no messing but she was the 1st person I'd seen that didn't believe you have to shout etc to show you are upset with them. No amount of pleading or crying from her kids would turn her from the punishment area but did it in a soft way and she said no loads lol (which I was so jealous as I'm a hothead!)
