Metamorphosis Diario

Saturday, September 24, 2005 - I'm ambivalent about Lucy

I have been watching the American Masters series on PBS televison. Rather unsurprisingly the series highlights a person who is an American Master, usually in some field of  the arts.

This weeks 'American Master' was Lucille Ball from the 1950's 'I love Lucy' TV show. I did ponder the fact that she should more appropriately be an  'American Mistress', but I suppose that title would have a rather negative connotation to it.

I just cannot see what this countries on-going fascination with Lucy is, I mean if I see that ' chocolate factory' clip one more time !!

Finally I got to thinking about Lucy's contribution to the American arts, and decided to do some comparissons to people that I would call American Masters, just to see how she really measures up to that title?

Ken Burns, Kurt Vonnegut, Billie Holiday, Paul Muni, Aaron Copeland, Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Upton Sinclair, Edgar Allen Poe,Tex Avery, Ernest Hemmingway, Harriet Beecher-Stowe, Emily Dickinson,George Gershwin, Irving Thalberg, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Samuel Barber.

Not a comedienne with ginger hair and a raspy voice from a black and white comedy series.

Rod Serling, Herman Melville, Mack Sennet,F. Scott Fitzgerald, Buster Keaton,Walt Disney, Jack London, Kirk Douglas, Robert Frost, John Steinbeck, Stanley Kubrick, Harper Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Presley,Edith Warton, Truman Capote, Leonard Bernstein, Lon Chaney.

Not the wife of a Cuban bongo drum player.

Gregory Peck,Tennessee Williams, James Cagney, Miles Davis, Jack Kerouac, Martin Scorsese, Maya Angelou, Billy Wilder, Frank Capra, Kathryn Hepburn, Winslow Homer, Robert Redford, John Singer Sargent, Gore Vidal, Louis Armstrong, King Vidor, Edward Hopper, Edgar Rice Burroughs,.

Sorry Lucy,  you fall way short of the list of my American Masters........................
