But the test was in an empty, flat car park. It took less than 5 mins start to finish. She had to drive for about 100 yds then reverse between cones about 50ft apart.

Really? Every car I've ever driven has a hand brake between driver and passenger, even our CR-V's (suv) hand brake was in the middle. I'm pretty sure most trucks do have a foot brake.

I've always driven Japanese cars, but would have assumed American cars to have the same set-up (perhaps they don't).

Are you sure you live in NJ? Have you seen the way people drive around here?

With a driving test like that what do you expect?

BTW did you read a few months ago Deedee's daughter went through a red light during her test...and passed?

The jag has an automatic handbrake...don't have that any more. The Land Rover has an electronic handbrake. Both vehicles are a load of crap...Land Rover is booked in for suspension problems.

My in laws have a Toyota Sienna 2 (or 3)year old and it has a foot operated (hand) break.

If I remember correctly all the mercs we've had had foot brakes. Although many luxury cars now have auto hand brakes...or a electronic button to press to engage the handbrake.

We're on our way to being LPRs this year, and have a home in NH.

I understand that we will need to get a NH driving licence. However as we are retaining our home here in the UK (and leaving a car which we'll need to insure etc), we don't want to give up our UK licences. Most of the DMVs seem to insist you surrender an out of country licence.

How many of you have both a UK and US licence?

I've still got my UK licence and I have the US one too. It works for me.

Sounds about the same as Tampa then, a closed simulated course on the car park at the back of the DMV building with no other traffic on it.
Not so much of a test, as a mere formality, after you've taken the multi-choice "written" exam.
