I always stand for the US anthem -- or any other anthem -- as I feel it is a courtesy to do so, and would like to think that folks from around the world would extend that same courtesy for "the Queen." |
Re: Do you stand up?
I'll stand for the national anthem....I'll actually sing along, because I actually like the tune. I'm tone deaf and my singing leaves a lot to be desired...I'm sure others around me are physically hurt by my efforts.
As a new USC, I'm still not comfortable with the hand on heart thing! Seriously, whatever country I'm in, and their national anthem's being played or sung, it's really no big deal for me to stand and show respect. Same when people pray, I've got no problem with looking respectful. It doesn't hurt me to do it at all. BTW....I know men should remove hats, caps whatever....is it correct for ladies to keep theirs on? I've had both sides of this so far. |

To me the anthem at the drop of a hat demonstrates an insecurity, that I find surprising from what is still the only real super-power, but at the heart of it, isn't that what all this nationalism and flag waving is?
The extreme left has tried to force that equation because Patriotism stood in the way of Communism’s basic concepts as a political religion. When people are bonded and work together toward a cause everything can be possible. This concept is lost on Europeans who prefer to bond on the basis of familial connections in the south and on the basis of class in the north.

It reminds me of Zhou Enlais famous words "It is too early to tell" but the question is about the American Revolution, The outcome of the revolution is still being fought, the Brits have been defeated but the true nature of America is unknown as yet, that can explain the Fox viewers fears of everything. 250 years or whatever it is since the Revolution seems like a long time, but in History I guess it is not.
That said America is young and new and not burdened by what Churchill said for the Balkans and can be said for most of Europe. (“The Balkans produce more history than they consume.â€

The Anthem, the pledge and the flags are part of a state propaganda that tries to instil, as Orwell (from Carl Schurz) put it "My country, right or wrong",
In fact, I have never been in another country that accepted self-criticism by its own citizens and most importantly criticism by every other nation in the world (Germany being a kind of an exception for historical reasons we all know). Europeans went as far as to ask for a say in who is the president of the U.S.

That is why I hate it, it is part of the hegemony of the USA, to dampen down opposition to unpopular wars, inequitable social policies, all based upon My country, right or wrong.

I stand up for the anthem, any anthem, it's respect for the country regardless.
Other than that, I stand up to piss. |

Here's the Red October scene -- there's a couple of minutes of dialogue before they start singing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsC2ETsZL0g |
