I really like the US national anthem - much more fun than GSTQ. ...
..... I'm a bit disappointed that it's not the custom for everyone to sing it together at a sporting occasion, instead everyone stands and listens to a local or fourth-rate national celeb sing it, usually very badly. |
Re: Do you stand up?
As for playing it at the drop of a hat, what can you say. If they want their pomp and circumstance, who are we to say they're wrong.

I stand for the English and US anthems. I don't stand for the British one, as the Scots, Welsh and whoever want to go there own way, it's good enough for the English to. :)

I also stand up when the US anthem is played; but fold my hands behind my back and assume a vacant expression which I usually hope is taken for respect.

.... So, it seems that the general consensus is that we should stand up. Does it make anyone else feel a bit awkward though? It's hard for me to explain succinctly. I understand that when in a foreign country to as they do, but I don't think of the US as a 'foreign' country. It is now my home.

Agreed, ....except to the extent that it was written about a war between our two countries! I find myself permanently conflicted, and it adds to my bemusement.
I keep threatening the missus that I'll sing the words of "To Anacreon in Heav'n" to get revenge for all the times she sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee" in England. |

Absolutely not a hope in hell that I would stand up. If the sheeple want to, that's fine, but i chose to have my own opinions and not subject myself to brain washing of the stars and stripes thanks.

I would expect someone who came to my house to respect my traditions. Obviously, I wont be inviting you around for dinner anytime soon. I don't do praying, but I remain silent while others do. |
