Agreed, ....except to the extent that it was written about a war between our two countries! I find myself permanently conflicted, and it adds to my bemusement.

..... I'm a bit disappointed that it's not the custom for everyone to sing it together at a sporting occasion, instead everyone stands and listens to a local or fourth-rate national celeb sing it, usually very badly.
 Agreed 110%!

As for playing it at the drop of a hat, what can you say. If they want their pomp and circumstance, who are we to say they're wrong.

We got married in an old plantation house - on the walls of which the wallpaper depicted battles from the Revolutionary war :)

I stand for the English and US anthems. I don't stand for the British one, as the Scots, Welsh and whoever want to go there own way, it's good enough for the English to. :)

I also stand up when the US anthem is played; but fold my hands behind my back and assume a vacant expression which I usually hope is taken for respect.

:D Me too.

That summarizes my feelings fairly nicely. As often as not I am wondering whyit is being sung, but given that it is,and despite now being a USC, I still feel like an intruder at someone else's party.

But we get the last laugh - the music is from an 18th century British drinking song!

I keep threatening the missus that I'll sing the words of "To Anacreon in Heav'n" to get revenge for all the times she sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee" in England.

And written on a British battleship, from which the view of the ".....flag [that] was still there ...." was seen.

Anyway, that particular campaign (the burning of Washington etc.) was a resounding British success, and the fact that Baltimore held out against the British was neither here nor there. The British freed thousands of American slaves, many of whom were given lands in Nova Scotia and elsewhere as homesteads. So much for the United States and its freedoms and liberties.

Absolutely not a hope in hell that I would stand up. If the sheeple want to, that's fine, but i chose to have my own opinions and not subject myself to brain washing of the stars and stripes thanks.

I think it's just good manners.

I would expect someone who came to my house to respect my traditions.

Obviously, I wont be inviting you around for dinner anytime soon.

I don't do praying, but I remain silent while others do.

But that's the point. Its our house now too.
and I have not heard of anyone trying to shout down the anthem or sing over it.

Exactly. If others want to stand up, then that's fine - I won't object - but don't expect me to stand also. Your praying analogy really falls down btw.
