Has anyone actually had to prove their residence in the UK when registering for a GP? I never did - in fact I don't think you even need an NI number, so I'm not sure how they even check eligibility...
I've kept some UK bank accounts open and they am getting statements for these sent to an address in the UK so even if they asked for some kind of documentary evidence I would be covered if I ever needed to be.

Some heath trusts are starting to tighten up on people from abroad using the NHS when they are not entitled to. Makes sense that this will continue as time goes by.

The GP receptionist appeared to be the arbiter of whether we were really resident in the UK. They wanted to see a utility bill with my name on it, but at that point we'd just moved in and only had the council tax bill. So I don't think it would be very hard to convince someone that you are resident here if you really have moved back, even if it is only for a few months. As long as you are willing to pay some council tax :-)

Have I misunderstood?

This is an interesting article about a couple who moved to Turkey and tried to use the NHS.
Yeah, yeah, yeah FB...I know it's the Daily Mail.

Oh, one other thing. Theoretically you can manage diabetes well for less than $750 a year, less if you cut some corners here and there. If you have the "right" kind of diabetes. Theoretically.

Mrs McDonald, who moved to Turkey with her husband in 2004, was told she was not entitled to free state health care because she is no longer a British citizen
'My wife and I are still British citizens and have paid taxes for the best part of 50 years before we moved to Turkey.

Typo...it should read 'Mrs McDonald, who moved to Turkey with her husband in 2004, was told she was not entitled to free state health care because she is no longer a British resident'

Mr McDonald also claims Cambridge NHS trust had threatened to contact the Foreign Office and stop him having his British visa renewed.

It also says: He said: 'I don't even need a British visa - I'm a British passport holder'
and
'My wife and I are still British citizens and have paid taxes for the best part of 50 years before we moved to Turkey.'
