I've kept some UK bank accounts open and they am getting statements for these sent to an address in the UK so even if they asked for some kind of documentary evidence I would be covered if I ever needed to be.
Yes, we've done the same. Still have bank acct and a address for mailing in the UK. But if the NHS checks your passport? hmmmm

He can buy in when he's been here as a PR or citizen for 5 years. It's not cheap!

Some heath trusts are starting to tighten up on people from abroad using the NHS when they are not entitled to. Makes sense that this will continue as time goes by.

Buy in??? Do you have more info on that? or know someplace online I can research it. I've looked all over the SS website and can't find anything on it.

When my wife and I registered for a GP last year here in Edinburgh (my wife is USC, I am UKC, but had lived in the US for the previous 9 years,) we were asked for proof of residence. We used our council tax statement, and that was sufficient. The council provide you with a tax bill very quickly after you move into a rented property!

The GP receptionist appeared to be the arbiter of whether we were really resident in the UK. They wanted to see a utility bill with my name on it, but at that point we'd just moved in and only had the council tax bill. So I don't think it would be very hard to convince someone that you are resident here if you really have moved back, even if it is only for a few months. As long as you are willing to pay some council tax :-)

Google with words such as permanent resident, medicare "5 years", site:.gov, etc. It's in there somewhere!

The way I understood it when I looked into was I could piggy back of my wifes' contributions and get it. The only extra cost were the same as a USC would pay for additional cover.

Have I misunderstood?

This is an interesting article about a couple who moved to Turkey and tried to use the NHS.

Oh, one other thing. Theoretically you can manage diabetes well for less than $750 a year, less if you cut some corners here and there. If you have the "right" kind of diabetes. Theoretically.

Have you not had any insurance since moving over?

I don't understand this article, at first it says:

Mrs McDonald, who moved to Turkey with her husband in 2004, was told she was not entitled to free state health care because she is no longer a British citizen
Then later in the article they say:

'My wife and I are still British citizens and have paid taxes for the best part of 50 years before we moved to Turkey.
So which is true? Should be pretty easy to verify.

Typo...it should read 'Mrs McDonald, who moved to Turkey with her husband in 2004, was told she was not entitled to free state health care because she is no longer a British resident'

I think there's more to this story than we are hearing about:

Mr McDonald also claims Cambridge NHS trust had threatened to contact the Foreign Office and stop him having his British visa renewed.
Clearly NHS thinks he is not a citizen. But isn't it his wife having treatment?? Can we believe anything in this article?

It is the Daily Mail.

It also says: He said: 'I don't even need a British visa - I'm a British passport holder'

and

'My wife and I are still British citizens and have paid taxes for the best part of 50 years before we moved to Turkey.'
