Black Widow tips

Found and killed my first black widow spider last night. Anything I can put down to prevent or at least slow down these spiders from my yard?

It's difficult to kill spiders in your yard -- too large an area to treat.

It is better to concentrate on keeping them out of the house.

The brown recluse, BTW, is far worse than the black widow. In general, avoid the same areas that you would avoid for scorpions: nesting sites of old decaying matter such as wood piles or leaf piles. I have also heard that for some reason, brown recluses like to nest near utility meters, which makes a bit of sense in that they are often camouflaged with greenery, not often visited or disturbed, and provide some shelter.

Hubby and I found two in our garage. We went out and bought Home Defense Liquid Spray from The Home Depot and also placed a few of those sticky traps in the corners.

Good Luck!

I was bitten by a brown recluse about two years ago while weed whacking, It f**kin hurt ! It left two fang marks in my hand about 1/8 inch apart, I sucked out the crap within seconds, but my hand still swelled up like a baseball. I was told that although they are not usually found this far north it probably fell from a passing truck. .... It would certainly have died in the winter if I hadn't flattened the nasty bitey thingy.

My wife can distinguish a Black Widows web. Having found it she catches it by 'strumming' the thread with a twig. The BW reacts and attacks the stick it is then withdrawn and firmly placed under a size 9 foot and immortalised :D . She then fishes out the egg pod which gets the same treatment.
Longleat Safari Park has numerous fact boards concerning wild life, one of them states that the toxicity of a BW is 16 times more deadly than a rattlesnake.

BTW, my wife is very good at catching snakes as well which is just as well as far as I am concerned. :D
