Black Widow tips
Found and killed my first black widow spider last night. Anything I can put down to prevent or at least slow down these spiders from my yard?

Re: Black Widow tips
It's difficult to kill spiders in your yard -- too large an area to treat.
It is better to concentrate on keeping them out of the house. http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/pdf/2061A.pdf The brown recluse, BTW, is far worse than the black widow. In general, avoid the same areas that you would avoid for scorpions: nesting sites of old decaying matter such as wood piles or leaf piles. I have also heard that for some reason, brown recluses like to nest near utility meters, which makes a bit of sense in that they are often camouflaged with greenery, not often visited or disturbed, and provide some shelter. |

Re: Black Widow tips
My wife can distinguish a Black Widows web. Having found it she catches it by 'strumming' the thread with a twig. The BW reacts and attacks the stick it is then withdrawn and firmly placed under a size 9 foot and immortalised :D . She then fishes out the egg pod which gets the same treatment.
Longleat Safari Park has numerous fact boards concerning wild life, one of them states that the toxicity of a BW is 16 times more deadly than a rattlesnake. |
Re: Black Widow tips
BTW, my wife is very good at catching snakes as well which is just as well as far as I am concerned. :D

Re: Black Widow tips
Kind of like the little critters myself. I've got a whole troupe of them in among the garage door sensors. They pretty much stay put, so it's fine with me until Octoberish when overpopulation sets in.
As for brown recluses, none this far west. No worries. |

Re: Black Widow tips
I once read that the most venomus spider is in fact the Daddy Longlegs but it's jaws are so small it can't bit a human.
