We just moved here last week I tried as well to gt account before came here and failed however took no time at all to open account in person.

I thought some banks (e.g. WaMu) allowed you to submit your drivers license info online to meet the ID requirements. This might work for the OP if they still have their US license.

We opened a US bank account during a reccie visit 3 mths before we actually moved. The account was opened with a bank my husband's company had a 'relationship' with, so it all went pretty smoothly. We did not have a US address at this time but it was pre 9/11 so maybe things have changed.
We did open it in person, though, and our bank here is part of the same group as our UK bank.
We used it to transfer money to pay the deposit on our house etc.
