We just moved here last week I tried as well to gt account before came here and failed however took no time at all to open account in person.

You don't need to be a US resident to have a US bank account. You may, however, have to find someone in the branch/HQ that knows what they are talking about first. Try calling a big bank in NYC, SF, Boston, and not First County Federal Savings in Bumblefunk, MO and it might be easier.

I thought some banks (e.g. WaMu) allowed you to submit your drivers license info online to meet the ID requirements. This might work for the OP if they still have their US license.

We opened our account before we moved here without an address or a ss number.
We did open it in person, though, and our bank here is part of the same group as our UK bank.
We used it to transfer money to pay the deposit on our house etc.
