Default New to group: fumbling through INS process and need info...

.. mainly on my drivers licence.

Have been in SC for a year driving on my UK licence. Married my husband in October last year and am on his insurance. Insurance company want me to have a South Carolina licence....

which I can't get without my SSN number and EAD,

and I am waiting for my EAD to get my SSN

Arghghghghghgh! I have until 27th July on my UK licence, and then the year will be up. And I have a month to present my non existant SC licence.

I feel like I am going round in circles. What should I do? Other than panic.

I see on the SSN that I can get a card saying that I am not authorised for employement, but when I went to the office... they said I can't get one without an EAD.

So confused.

Do you have an ITIN, will they accept that instead?
It was a couple of years ago, pre 9/11 and in NY, so don't know if it can be done in your case, but I used my ITIN to get licence.

What status does your husband hold?

When and where did you file the I-765, and on what basis? Do you have a
Receipt Notice?

Default My husband....

.. is a US citizen.

I filed in December and have a receipt notice. Filed for change of status etc.

I have decided to go to the DMV office (have to go to one out of town) with everything I DO have and see if they can do ANYTHING.

If you filed for the EAD in December, 2002 along with your I-485 adjustment of status application and/or the I-130 if you are adjusting due to marriage to a USC on a basis other than a K-1 Fiancee Visa, then you are entitled to walk into the BCIS office you filed at with a copy of your receipt and/or cancelled check, a copy of the application/petition you filed and "demand" an EAD. You are eligible to this on 91st day after your filing/acceptance of your applications/petitions. It will be given to you the same day you ask for it.

Rete has told you exactly what to do.

The DMV office may be prevented by law from issuing you the license until
you show work authorization. So you *must* solve the EAD problem.

If you still have problems with getting the EAD after doing what Rete said,
you should ask for the help of your Congressperson. Make a telephone call
to the local office of the Member of the House of Representatives for your
district, and ask to speak with the person in charge of immigration
inquiries.
