Default English RN and family needs help with the process to move to California

Hi Everyone

We want to move to to California and just don't know where to start, has anyone gone through the process? Or does anyone have any information that can help us in the right direction.

Thanks in advanced

Hello and welcome to BE.

If you take a look down the thread titles in this forum you'll find loads of threads from nurses who want to move to the US...it will give you some idea how difficult it is. We also have a Nursing Forum. Also take a look in the BE Wiki and read through the stickied thread at the top of this forum's index page. Loads of info in there about the ways to move to the US.

Many of us have gone through the process. Start here: http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Pulaski_Simplified. If you can answer "yes" to any of the questions, you might be able to get a visa. If not, you won't be coming to the US as anything other than a visitor.

I will note that, while there are lots of jobs available for nurses, there are NO visas for nurses - and that likely won't change for the next few years. Research: nurse retrogression. Sorry!

Welcome to BE and good luck!

Though with retrogression, it's not likely something that will happen for years unless you find someone willing to sponsor a H1, but that wouldn't allow the spouse to work and with the costs involved, unless you've got niche skills, you'd find it very unlikely an employer would bother.

Plenty of past threads to give you a good idea of what is involved in getting certified too if you search them out

Mrs FBOD is a RN, we went all the way through CGFNS accreditation,THEN (-if you have enough hours) Fla Board of Nursing Approval, THEN the NCLEX exam. total 2 years.

then she would have had to wait some 5-7 years due to retrogression. Fortunatley she has a nice hubby who got an L1

A lot will depend on when trained and what is on the transcripts, will need hours both clinical and theory on your transcripts in Mental health, Paeds, Obstetrics and general Adult. Once meeting requirements need to sit and pass NCLEX which can be done in the UK and once found a employer depending on route will depend on waiting several months or years depending on type of visa. Most nurses go under EB3 which is retrogressed and currently taking several years.

May want to consider another country like I did, love Canada and staying here otherwise would still be waiting in the UK and have been since 2006
