Oddly enough, so do the spouses of those in the UK on work permits! Indeed, they are allowed to work anywhere in the European Union, not just in the UK!!!! LOL.
(Also in both the UK and Australia gay partnerships are recognised so someone who is on an expat posting and has a gay partner can have them accompanying them as well. The USA does not recognize any partnerships other than the traditional man & wife relationship).

Hi Englishmum
Well to be honest with you, my husband was made redundant, and we were going to move to Spain anyway, my husband is Spanish. Then the USA offer came up. So we went for the USA. His company have already begun the process for the Green Card, although as you know its a very lengthy process. It is written in his contract that if, for whatever reason, he doesn't get Green Card approval then his company will pay for our return to either the UK or Spain. We've already decided that if the USA doesn't work out, and who knows, maybe the kids and I won't like it there. Then we'll definately move to Spain. England doesn't really appeal to us any more, its changing dramatically and not for the better.

I think this $1000 is the fee for priority processing....but then again the company's attorneys probably charged quite a bit for filing it too! LOL.

Add the lawyer's fees...

EAD comes first. You can't get an SSN without it.
