...and shows like Today Tonight are plugging books that claim you can feed a family for a week on $21, 2 minute noodles anyone - no different. Meanwhile the same, 'sell your old gold' outfits people see in the UK are in all the local shopping malls here - again no different.

WHERE you are born makes you WHO you are.

Small changes in our make up occur during 7 year periods, as in the ages of man. You can expect to feel unsure in a new country for about 7 years. Hence the, "love it one day, all over the place the next."
-
You will feel homesick for many years regardless of how much you like a new place. You may not recognise that strange feeling as homesickness but that is what it is.
-
Comparisons are useless. Whatever Austrlalia is, is what it is. Price comparisons are even more useless. Only income and cost of living have any real relevance. Most goods that are cheaper, if you want them, are avaiable on the internet.

As a last point, SPAM (the tinned meat rubbish) is now being advertised on UK television as a good meal for middle income families. I rest my case.

I remember the ads in local Aussie papers for factories which invited the reader to brew their own beer.I thought this was a indication of austerity in Aus with the high interest rates and large mortgages.
I've honestly did well since I returned.Partly because being out there was a good kick in the arse I needed.
I'm amazed at the boasts and comparisons on this forum many I believe to be kidding themselves. Costs in both countries are roughly similar. I don't believe Aussies are particularly savvy consumers hence a lot of over pricing.

However, it is worth bearing in mind that living abroad can take a long time to feel right, even if everything seems okay on the surface; worse if it doesn't.
I'm sorry Aus didn't work out for you but as you are now back in the UK (I think anyway) I'm sure you'll be much happier now. At least you went back rather than stay and whinge. Good on YOU.
