i would concur with this, although i am in Canberra, i find Australia to be beautiful ... yet incredibly insular and boring. i miss the lack of the "always on the go" life from the UK, and i am finding it incredibly hard to make friends.

oh well

Yes to all those comments. Wonder if Canberra makes it even harder?
Sorry can't assure you it will get any better.

Maybe...but i assume neither of us are kids...Speaking of UK tv staying in tonight watching on dvd Spooks..what a great show.Perth sure is a great place to catch up on well over a decades worth of tv avoidance when in UK.

Jeez, now you tell me:lol:

Buttloads of shopping is right up my street.
I should have gone to Melly, not Perth.

i urge anyone who hasnt tried and is thinking negative things in Perth, Adelaide or Canberra, before you throw in the towell, try Melbourne. its a great city, it has four seasons, way more european, great food, shopping and much much more going in the arts, music and theatre and victoria is a great state for weekends.

it wont be for everyone but worth a look.

we thought that about melbourne ie lets consider a move in australia rather than going back to england, and so went for 2 weeks last year and i didn't take to it. we saw a lot of homeless people and crazy (mentally ill crazy) roaming the streets. people were rather aggressive - like if you walked in front of them by a mistake or drove in the wrong lane. there seemed to be loads of kids bunking school just driving round on the tram/bus all day.

i got my purse stolen and DH got into an altercation at a bar when someone accused him of deliberately spilling his drink on him - and this guy had about 8scary looking mates round him.

we went to the school that a friend of a friend's children go to and i dont consider myself racist, but there were real problems with different racial gangs - her 14 year old told us quite nonchalantly - the serbs hate the croats, the somalis fight the ozzie kids, everyone hates the greeks etc etc.

there were some lovely parts and certainly it is more lively than perth, with a much wider range of shops selling gear that doesnt date back to the 80's, but i actually ended up wanting to come back to perth!! i suppose it might have been different if we'd had different experiences but thats just how it turned out and i didnt feel at ease at all.

Cannot help but get the feeling that just perhaps Melbourne is a little too highly praised..although aspects of it i do appreciate dearly, especially after a bad day in snorey, borey Perth.
Back there in Febuary for a further assessment....

I live in canberra ... my commute is only 15 minutes (on a bad day!) it is the best place for kids I've lived in.. I'm really starting to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle in canberra ... the cycle paths are great, parklands everywhere, sunshine most of the time ..

I don't find it insular at all ... but i do find people reserved.... and the place is boring in the sense that I have to be more pro-active to find places and things of interest in canberra...

Canberra has live theatre, concerts, galleries, pub music scene, festivals etc etc .. but you have to search to find it all .. they are scattered all over the place and some of it is hard to know about if you've not long arrived here..

Its funny (to me) that of all the places Ive lived as a kid, London was the best. But then.......if my Mum felt the cold Id be the first in one of her horrid knitted cardigans................

Thanks for the supportive comments, interesting to hear some people having similar feelings about Perth.

Update on our situation - we are not moving back to the UK, we are prepared to give it go in Melbourne! Ive spent 8 months there a few years back and it was always my preferred choice orginally, its the sporting capital so suits me perfect. Now the house is now on the market, the wife has already got a job and ill be heading off myself as soon as someone makes a respectable offer!

I could not be anymore excited about making this move, hope selling the house doesnt drag on too long, then its good bye and good riddance to Perth! :D

As a Perth local, I'm disappointed you feel that strongly.

Perth isn't a bad city, but I acknowledge it's not for everyone.

If Melbourne suits your needs, then you should like it. Best of luck.

Understand where you are coming from. Perth is not a place long term for a lot of folk. Know so many who have left most not to return.
Wonder how you will find Melbourne? Do give updates. All the best on your relocation.

Re: 18 months in Perth - missing home!

I've enjoyed reading this thread. We've been researching the whole of Oz, trying to determine where best to be, and of course much is dictated by work.

We had toyed with Perth but (from afar) were concerned of feeling a little cut off and had considered many of the negative points raised. I dont see the positive points outweighing the neg at the moment. I know its horses for courses and one man's whatnot is another mans etcetc.. but I have to say, I think this thread has 'helpfully' tipped the balance for me. :)
