' Monocultural' OZ is one of the most multicultural countires on earth, maybe you have never been to Sydney or Melbourne. l don't know where you live but l guess somewhere like Perth or Adelaide would seem boring, monocultural and conservative.

life is what you make it! and if friends and family count highly...then dont move!

comaprisons are fraught with difficultly, so here is a little secret, dont compare. adversity breads well rounded and experienced lives. what would people rather be, experienced, worldly, fun and broke at 65, or rich and having the "missed out on life" feeling (that probably never goes away).

now if someone said...perth, now there is a place with little community, no support groups or diversity, few markets, people never go out, no fun! then i might be worried. but sunday shopping times, who cares! why would anyone want to spend sunday shopping when they can see the footy or go camping.

Note, in my personal judgement, people, community, ambitions, spirit, events, all make for somewhere to live, NOT sunday shopping, TV, pub closing times..(and whatever other apsects upset people from the UK).

I would suggest only in a limited way.If we are talking of true multi cultural societies take a look at some of the following.
Malaysia.....Three main racial groups.Malay,Chinese,Indian all who go to own schools until higher level, hence language is maintained as well as culture. All ofcourse learn the national language,Bahasa Malaysia. Besides tongue they maintain food and religion. And most speak English.
Singapore.....A far smaller version of the above.
South Africa.....Eleven official languages are recognised for a very diverse nation in every respect.

Do you mean when you've given up on life? A place to get old in as perhaps as one feels one's not missing a great deal.

Life is what you make it true enough. Even more important that you decide well where you live as it that will enable you to live it well.

Guys can we remember this is someone's update on their life in Aus. Please stop the bickering as to whether you like it or don't like it as this is not your update.

Between my partner and myself we have lived in almost every continent and visited the rest. We are currently bound in WA and have to aggree withy the poster.
Perth does deserve it reputation and i often wonder about those who bang on about the great place to bring up a family! It has serious crime problems, serious drug problems and all the other issues that a buig city has. Add in a health care system that is a joke and a school system that is unbelievable. And lets not evenj go down the University route - the worst bits of each system from around the world bundled together.
Most importantly though, i have to agree with the piece concerning the locals. They are unfriendly, closed shop and closed minds. Arrogant to the point of hair pulling. As a place to live it "ok". We will stay for a while untill the global economy picks up, but its certainly not the wondewrful place a lot of people think it will be.
And lets not even talk about the weather. (when we arrrived we believed Perth had this amazing ever lasting summer - get real it has higher rainfall than London)

You don't think it is wonderful but the next person might do. Perth isn't for everyone. I haven't experienced any of the bad things you talk about and find it a fantastic friendly place to bring up my family. People have to keep an open mind and see for themselves if it is right for them.

I agree, I will be in WA myself next month, I have an open mind towards it, I have too!
I was there twice in the last couple of years, both short stays, so nothing to go on there. So this time it will be the real deal...living there.

Still though everyone's opinion is as valuable as the next on here.
I don't think Perth gets more rainfall than London though, it still winter in OZ and from the weather forecasts I have been following for Perth, I would still class it to a pretty good summer in London.

Re: 18 months in Perth - missing home!

Sure - if you look hard enough there is plenty to bitch about Perth. I hate that I live in such a conservative state, they won't even vote for daylight savings! There is one important thing you're missing though... there is something to bitch about in every city.

My parents immigrated to Australia decades ago and believe it was the best choice. Dad prefers it over London any day of the week. Each time I am in London, I am aghast at the crap weather, the haze and the unfriendly people of all shades of colour.

Perth isn't that nosy at all, I guess it depends on where you live and who you associate with. I live by myself in a unit and no one talks to me, I don't talk to them and that suits me fine!

As for making friends, yep, agree, it's hard to make new friends - even as a Perth local I find it hard to make new friends. The best way to make new friends is to get involved in work activities, go to the pub a bit more and join in the footy tipping in winter. Sure fire way to get in with anyone.

Lastly, Perth is what you make of it - Don't expect things to just happen you need to be a little proactive yourself.

for the original poster - try another city before you give up on AU. Out of all the other cities I've visited, I like Melbourne the most - it's diverse, feels to me like a faster version of Perth and buttloads better shopping!

Re: 18 months in Perth - missing home!

I second with all of the above.
Everything in life is what you make of it, Perth is just like everywhere else(if you know what I mean)Every city can have the same feel, nosiness, anti social aspects etc. But its the ''What to get out of it factor'', what your looking for etc.
You gotta make it happen, you know!
