Not that far really. Google says 830 miles so probably 2 hour flight tops (Adelaide to Perth is 1350 miles and 2h50)

I was wondering, since the article specifies it was on an interstate. Usually, stopping on the shoulder on an interstate is prohibited except for … emergencies??

But "prohibited" doesn't actually prevent something happening. Here in NC I have seen people walking down the shoulder, riding a bicycle, and carrying a child, crossing the interstate, and hiking/ backpacking in the median, among other things.
