WTF in America

I don't disagree with any of your post, but the current situation is a lot more complicated now that most US states have legalized marijuana on some level, and several, including most notably California, have legalized it for recreational use. The problem is in those states marijuana has switched from being a prohibition & supply issue to being a tax fraud racketeering issue, where criminals are willing to supply un-taxed marijuana* for less than it would cost to buy legal weed.
In California, this problem is exacerbated by the permitting process, which requires a legal dispensary to be approved by the municipality in which it will operate, and something like two thirds of municipalities in California are refusing to approve permits for any dispensaries, so for all intents and purposes, legally approved, taxed marijuana is unavailable.
For context, trafficking of cigarettes remains an issue in the US, primarily the transport of cigarettes from Native American reservations where the tax is low, for illegal sale in markets far from a reservation.
* IIRC in the spring of 2022 an illegal marijuana farm and processing center in California was raided and over $2bn, yes billion, of untaxed contraband marijuana was seized.

) research. Since I last looked a year ago, at least 4 shiny new retail marijuana stores have opened in my vicinity. Still not in my specific town, but all within 10-15 minutes drive. Three of them were monster-sized stores, larger than a typical 'high street' retail store, and absolutely full of an overwhelming variety of products - gummies, tinctures, flower ('bud'), vape cartridges, etc, well staffed with helpful, knowledgeable staff (it's still rather 'other-worldly' for me to have a serious conversation in a public retail store with a 'shop assistant' about the different effects of 'Maui Wowie' vs 'Mango Haze' bud!). One store carries over 300 varieties of 'flower' alone, plus over 100 'tinctures' (liquid concentrates), hundreds of 'gummies', and more. This is one key difference between the 'legal' market and the illegal market; you can't 'browse' the illegal market in a retail store (or on a publicly available website)! I ended up buying a bunch of different products with the primary aim of getting a good night's sleep; this was my one-day shopping haul ...
That's two 'tinctures' (liquid concentrates), (one appropriately named 'drift off'), four packs of 'gummies' (three aimed at sleep), some tablets, and another pack of gummies aimed at sleep (appropriately named 'lights out'). I'm slowly experimenting with each one to see which one will send me off to sleep the best.
Also, it's worth noting that prior to the major legalization push around the US, 80% of all marijuana grown in California was sold outside of California - basically, California was the marijuana growing center of the country, which makes sense based on climate. Legalization is slowly chipping away at that illegal industry, but - these growers will never be able to legally sell their product outside of CA (at least, not until Federal law allows marijuana sales and transportation across state lines) so there's almost zero chance that California will ever see a conversion of most growers to legal status. So if you are a grower in CA, you either stay illegal, or accept that your target market is now only 20% of what it was previously, and hope the extra revenue (from legal sales) makes up for the difference. Growers are in a tough position.

Am I cynical to want to know the race of the shooter… because they were not killed by SWAT… and there is usually a rave based correlation there… I guess it being a 6 year old may override that anyway…

The report I read said that the child had already been restrained by another adult (teacher?) when the police arrived on the scene. So there was no need for further police action to restrain and remove him.

interesting that you classify shooting a suspect as restraining them… I have seen that argument made for choking them etc, but not shooting… reading between the lines of the story it sounds like the teacher was going for the gun as she was shot… since it says she was shit in the hand and body with a single shoot and the fact she cleared the room without any further shots… at that age they usually have an aid in class so it sounds like they were restraining tue suspect as the shot teacher evacuated the room…

The kids parents have absolutely no excuse for this and should do jail time not to mention picking up the tab for medical expenses, any disability and time loss from work. Even the NRA would have trouble spinning this to not support those payments.

more likely they would say that if the teacher had been armed as well she could have shot her 6 year old student to neutralize the threat…

Perhaps this should be in a "Brits do the darndest things" thread, but I figured it might slide into the WTF genre!
