Even absent the tragic intervention of the police he was already compromising his "bright and promising future". 
ETA Just read the NBC article. Idiot. Idiocy is no reason to be shot by the police though.

My view is I wouldn't trust the cops to not be doing their level best to trash the deceased reputation. The guy was hurt, and unarmed. Me, I'd run away, and monitor the situation.
