And who actually enjoys weddings? (I mean the big OTT affairs requiring special outfits - hats!! - formal receptions etc.)

And when did it become acceptable to include registry details with the invitation??

I enjoy weddings as long as there is an open bar (nothing fancy needed from me, just some cold beer) and good music and a dance floor....

I'm not a big fan of the registry thing personally but its america. complaining about it is like complaining about americans being insular, retarded and born again. its just how it is

We were married in a small chapel in TN, about 80 guests. My wife and mother in law did the flowers themselves and they were very impressive, we had simple snack food for a short reception. We had to go to New York to get my wife her UK visa so this was our Honeymoon.
That sounds really nice, we just had a few more, maybe 90-odd. We served pre-ceremony drinks - lemonade and mint-juleps. A friend who is a minister married us. We had it at a local metro-owned mansion, which was pretty cheap and a tax-write off to boot...

it was just a nice party

She needs a medal or two.

I found out yesterday that a colleague of mine got married in August and his wife is expecting their first kiddo already. Kind of nice that he kept it all private, I liked that. I was invited to a colleague's wedding once before. It was really really super-weird.

We got married by the local JP, and had two witnesses and my daughter as guests. It was around 9.30am so afterwards we went to the local greasy diner for breakfast.

I've only been to one wedding here my BIL's it was really good day. Though what's the tapping your cutlery on you glass to get the bride and groom to kiss all about?

American tradition. Like smearing cake all over each others' faces and expensive tuxedo's.
When we got hitched, family and friends came over from the UK. Northern CA had never seen so many hats.

ours cost about $2000 in vegas. We had an upgraded top of the line suite at the venetian. We got married in a hot air balloon at dawn. We invited just my wife's parents and sister (mine being in switzerland at the time). WE gave them 10 days notice. The balloon cost $750 with preacher.
The wedding got cancelled on saturday morning because of bad winds after my wife had been up since 2am doing her hair ready for a 5am start. The mother had managed to arrange secretly the entire family about 40+ people, a reception and cake for us. She was more than a little put out that the wedding was cancelled that day. So we had wedding cake before the wedding.
after another 2am start for my wife we finally ran into the balloon at 5:40 (40 minutes late) waved good by to the throng below and spent a very nice time in the balloon getting married. We landed in the desert somewhere and were driven back. I played devil in disguise on my car stereo, the road was called devils road... life is great!
I wouldnt have changed a thing except to have not been late because of the uninvited inlaws.

I had a nice but small wedding, friends to do the flowers and cake. And our money like most canny Brits went towards the down payment.
Again, I think it's all about looks, how things appear to everyone else, keeping up with the Jones' etc. We had a big wedding for English standards, but small when compared to the American norm. I organised it all by myself. I think all in all it cost us £6000, that was everything, wedding dress, everyone's clothes, flowers, photographer & photos (including negatives!), church, bell ringers, rings, catered dinner for all our guests, wedding cake (which people still talk about to this day!), DJ & our honeymoon.

We paid for it all ourselves, Dev used the money from a car he had sold in the US & I just used money from my pay cheque each month. It didn't put us into debt & we have no regrets. Just wish I had better memories of the day, that's all. We will be renewing our vows at some point, maybe the 10 year mark.

Oh & I never thought or dreamed about my wedding as a kid, as far as I remember, I never wanted to get married!
