It's fair for US Accents. I say root. That pronunciation is a pretty major way of deciding where one is from here. My accent is Midland Midwestern, where the author is from, and we say 'root' to identify a highway route. However since I've moved around a lot it's interchangeable with me.

but this is still an American Accent. soft spoken, and possibly more subtle than after 30 odd years living in the UK........ but it still is Iowan.

I think he lived in the UK 20 years the first go around after he graduated from college and then came back here-well up in New England for a few years, 'bout 30 miles down from where my folks were living and then back over to England again.

To me, he sounds like he has a Midlands accent with just a touch of American.
