It's fair for US Accents. I say root. That pronunciation is a pretty major way of deciding where one is from here. My accent is Midland Midwestern, where the author is from, and we say 'root' to identify a highway route. However since I've moved around a lot it's interchangeable with me.

but this is still an American Accent. soft spoken, and possibly more subtle than after 30 odd years living in the UK........ but it still is Iowan.

Nope. It'd definitely polluted If you hear a clip of my voice in the Lounge then you'll know what Midwestern sounds like. The clip you provided sounds like a guy who's been living in the UK.

His accent is English one minute, and American the next. I could spot some American, but a lot of English.

Agreed. You may not be able to take away the essentials, but it has been polluted,

It's been diluted sure.

I flip back and forth depending on who I talk to when using 'aunt'. I'll go from 'ant' to 'ont' like that. Within my family it's pronounced 'aunt'.

I also make the difference between 'pin' and 'pen'.

I think he lived in the UK 20 years the first go around after he graduated from college and then came back here-well up in New England for a few years, 'bout 30 miles down from where my folks were living and then back over to England again.

To me, he sounds like he has a Midlands accent with just a touch of American.

RoadWarriorFromLP come on man we are in the USA, surely you arnt going to hold me to spelling errors, gramatical mistakes and typos. Either way I will firmly point the finger and apportion blame to Mr Gates spellchecker.
