Thats a really great accent - Response

There's a big difference here that Idon't think is readily apparent in the states. Accents can carry a lot of social distinction in the UK beyond mere geography. Apart from the New England "first of the Mayflower brigade" wannabees, I'd say that wasn't too prevalent here.

You know, the kids and I were walking the dogs yesterday in mystic vale and bumped into a lovely english couple. We chatted for about 10 minutes, ( I wouldnt let them go, just wanted to hear that beautiful accent) and I told them that just before we parted. They had lived in canada for many years and were a little embarrassed that they still had an accent. I told them never ever to lose it, I loved hearing it......!

To some of us though, it wears thin after a while. I would like to be liked for me, not because I was the "quaint" little Brit with the "cute" accent, with everything I say being laughed at because of the accent, not the content of what I have said.
I would be more than happy to return home and never hear that infuriating "I just lurve your accent!" ever again.
I hear it 50 times a day, I'm not kidding.
It has actually been a small factor in why I am keen to return home. I don't find it gives me an edge or makes me special, I have a big enough personality as it is, I don't need an edge.
It's a shame that many people don't see beyond the accent and like me for me here.
It has left me feeling lonely, if the truth be known. Every conversation revolves around the UK, UK slang, comparisons between the UK and the US, my cute accent, etc. I feel like I'm something of a novelty. I hate that feeling.
No one wants to just chat about stuff.

I've noticed people's lovely accents when we first meet, but after that it's pretty much irrelevant - I don't even think about it with people I know.

As to wanting to chat about other stuff - have you tried steering the conversation in different directions?
Believe me, I know where you're coming from...

I usually just say 'thanks' occasionally I say 'I don't have an accent you do.' A lot of Americans don't seem to think they have an accent at all. I really hate if someone says my accent is 'cute'. To me small kids and fluffy animals are cute not accents.
