Re: Thats a really great accent - Response
I know exactly what you mean, and I never could figure out why they talk that way? Seemed to be more frequent among the women. I just assumed it was an upper crust/WASPy/High society kind of thing.

You mean the one epitomised by Mr C. Grant?
Out of the actors of his time, he is deffo my favourite.
Seemed to be laughing at himself.
BTW, not sure how you'd characterise her American accent, (maybe a generic West coast??) but its very, very sexy.
Soft, gentle and sort of creamy, in a way.

I guess, but then as many here know I'm a serious fan of Bill Bryson's books. The first time I had heard of him, I actually heard him being interviewed on something on NPR. Anyway, he sounded like that, that wannabee Brit or NE prep school grad or however you wish to describe it. Then I found out about his roots- Bill, I said, come on, you're from Iowa fer cryin' out loud.

(A barista prepares coffee, a bitter drink. A barrister prepares litigation, which is often much more more bitter than coffee. This could explain the problem with having your name misunderstood...)
Plaudits for hitting on the barista and milking that accent for what it's worth. But it's a universal rule that hitting on servers and strippers is usually a waste of time. I'd suggest hitting on the customers, instead.

If there are any other Dr Who fans on here (I'm a ninth doctor girl meself!)
this one might work for you....
I got so fed up with being called everything from Austrailian to Swedish (???!?) by customers (I work in a coffee shop) that I now inform them I am from a small Welsh village called Raxicoricofallupatorious.
The best bit is, they believe me.
If I ever meet Russell T Davies (DW writer) I will thank him (its actually a planet from one of the episodes).....
Sad I know but it gives me a small laugh in a dull day.

Re: Thats a really great accent - Response
thats hardly fair, as I say rowt and not root now........but still maintain my accent. You definately have to change the pronunciation of some words or people will think you're speaking mandarin.
