Bye bye Alex. Your ambition got the better of you and ended in abject embarrassment for you and your party.

I wonder if the SNP will hold on to power in future elections? I read yesterday that the Scottish Assembly elections achieved a much lower turnout than the UK election in Scotland did, presumably because Scottish voters thought the Westminster election more relevant than one for a Scottish Assembly.

Now Scottish voters know that they need to vote for the Scottish Assembly. Unionist parties will make sure to get folks out for the vote. So maybe the next Scottish Government will be Labour?

If they're smart (ha, politicians smart?) they will still deliver on their promises AND do something for the rest of the union too. By doing so, the likelihood of a further referendum would diminish even further. One can hope.

Maybe it was just the media I was following, but he seemed to slink off pretty early last night, and left Sturgeon to field the "brave face" aspect. I hadn't thought he could get much lower in my estimation, but he exceeded expectations

I thought his short speech once the result was clear was pretty mealy mouthed.

This referendum, and by inference Alex Salmond, has achieved one thing - it's reenergized people politically. I really wish there was a General Election hot on the heels of this - I would hope the momentum would be transferred. Increased devolution in Scotland may lead to decentralization as a whole, which I don't think would be a bad thing.

Having lived in Scotland for 9 years, the range of responses doesn't surprise me. No voters are getting a feel for what it is to be like being English in Scotland. Some people don't care, some are welcoming, some will have a laugh with you, but a vocal minority will tell you to **** off back to England and mean it.

Salmond has basically had everything he's ever believed in rejected by his own people and unceremoniously thrown right back in his face.

Apologies for quoting myself but I was amused on reading this...

"He thanked the more than 1.5 million Scots who voted for independence, saying, "This has been a triumph for the democratic process and for participation in politics.""
