I bought several pairs of socks here in the US in the past year.

ALL of them have holes in.

I'm doing nothing different in how I ware, what I ware, or how I care for my tootsies.

So, conclusion is I bought cr@p.

Any suggestions for where I can get M&S quality at M&S prices?

Other than M&S - Mrs HTS is headed back to the UK tomorrow, so that is taken care of in the short term...

Why not M&S? I know their delivery charges are high. I buy from them and House of Fraser and justify it to myself that I could have spent that money going into town and having lunch etc on a Saturday. Plus you`re supporting the British economy.

Sorry - M&S is taken care of - Her in Doors will stock up for me while she's in Good Ol' Blighty.

But as far as a US source goes...

These are not M&S prices, but I love SmartWool socks. They hold up very well, keep your feet toasty when it's chilly and not too hot when it's warm. Just remembered you're in Phoenix, so perhaps not the best recommendation.

Failing that, try Kohls - I got a job lot of socks there a while back when a bunch of my older ones wore out and they're doing the job nicely ...

Regarding toe nail cutting, the holes are nowhere near the toes, except one!

And there doesn't appear to be any thing in my shoes that rubs...

Could it be related to alien abduction? I would hate to miss out on this! Should I drink Budweiser and shoot guns?

Same problem here - I seem to be forever buying socks for DH and The Dude! Hubby's latest lot Goldtoe socks?? are holding up reasonably well but The Dude's white sports socks are looking a bit threadbare again.

I suggest stocking up next trip home. I buy The Dude Asda sleeveless vests every time we go home as all the vests over here are too 'clingy' apparently .

I had this problem for years.. why are American socks such crap.. then I gradually realised, you pay low prices you get crap socks. Pay $8 - $20 for a pair of socks, they fit nicely, and last for years. SmartWool, Carhartt, other good brands. They seem a lot of money in comparison to a shirt or a pair of pants, but that's life..

It's those bloody top load washing machines that are responsible for many of the holes in clothes. Since we moved out of a rental with a top loader I've not had a problem...until we go to our condo in Toronto where we have a top loader. Guess what's the first thing I'm going to buy on my next visit?

I've got a front loader and we still get a lot of holes in the clothes. It looks like the fabric is not actually woven very well in most garments.

I blamed my top loader too (and it definitely made some of the holes) but then I realised that when the cat sits on my lap he 'kneads' my belly and put his nails through my clothes (which just so happens to be where a lot of holes show up). Just call me Sherlock

Though for the money, Banana Republic for smart, Target/Old Navy for regular, can't complain to much if you get a season out of them.

You can get some great winter socks in the sporting shops though, like EMS etc.

When my daughter moved she mentioned that suddenly she'd started to find small holes in her clothes. She's got a top loader...for now.
