Complained about this a while back, about the 20 mph school speed zone that's flashing all during the school day...when the school has been closed for years.

Well the town rezoned the building a couple spots over to be multi use commercial/residential so they could convert the upstairs into some apartments, converted a lot from commercial to residential on the other side so condos can be built. They also rezoned a spot at the bottom of the hill to be a weed lab testing facility...So they can get around to rezoning things...but yet this former school is still zoned a school :/

​​​​​​⠀‹Most grocery stores as well as Lowe's and HD in my area now have self scan in most stores, but it is noteable that stores in "high loss" areas were either slow to add a self-scan option, or still don't have self scan.

Most of the big stores around here have self-checkout but there is always someone overseeing them. Mainly to fix things when needed (like checking ID on things like alcohol or DVDs) but I'm sure part of their remit is to look out for shop lifters.

Wal Mart receipt checkers...
I swear...sometimes the sheep queue up to have their receipt checked.
I never engage...probably get banned at some point.

They should only be checking receipts if you have unbagged items (usually if that's your only item). At least that's my experience. If I have a mixture of bagged and unbagged I usually have my receipt out and ready and they just wave me by without looking.

Back when our daughter was a baby though, no matter how many bags I had, they would always check the receipt with diapers in my cart, without fail. They must get nicked a lot round our way :lol:

There always supposed to be someone overseeing the self scan, but at very quiet times of day, say early in the morning, the person at the customer service desk, or an assistant from the regular serviced check out lines has come over to approve an alcohol sale for me or to help with a problem.
​​​​​​⠀‹In my neck of the woods, most Walmarts don't seem to have receipt checkers these days, but when there is one I usually get waved straight past. :)

​​​​​​⠀‹Based on my observations, the receipt checkers in Walmart appear to have an "idiosyncratic sampling methodology", which I presume is skewed to where experience tells the they are most likely to identify issues. ;) I have also observed that the sampling methodology appears consistent irrespective of the color/ethnicity of the receipt checker! :lol:

We always seem to have a receipt checker, but there's generally no rhyme or reason to their checking habits. A lot of the time I wonder if just having my receipt out as I get to the door is enough to satisfy them, or if they just can't be arsed checking mine.

What is developing into a peeve now is that starting around Christmas time, they seem to have no baskets in my Walmart anymore, meaning I have to push a bloody trolley around even if I only need a handful of things since I will never go in raw unless going under my own volition because experience has taught me that my wife will invariably think of 7.5 billion things to text me that she forgot we needed right as I'm about to get in line.

The only time I see anyone checking receipts is if they set off the alarm on the way out (and not always then). Or occasionally when wheeling out a big-box item like a TV.

I've not been to Costco over here but on a recent trip to the UK, went to Costco and they routinely check everyone's receipt.

If you only need a handful of things, why bother with a basket or trolley? In those circumstances, if I can't comfortably carry it to the checkout, it don't get bought.

In Costco it's part of the agreement that you allow receipts to be checked.

WalMart however, has no right to check your receipt.
They can ask though...

Handful is just an expression, but I always grab a basket as a matter of course because I never know what I might end up needing while I'm in. I just extend that to the trolley if there are no baskets, especially when I have eggs in the mix.

I think there is some data analysis about that indeed shows self checkout to be slower than using a manned till, certainly in the UK where they are shoving items down at you at fierce pace and you have your huge bag for life ready. Obviously, the staff cost element is the factor here. The loss of revenue from items not scanned is probably no different and the weight check is usually pretty good - causing the befuddled look on old grannies when it blurts out 'Unexpected item in bagging area". The biggest ruse, so I am told, was weighing fresh fruit and veg against Carrot's which are the lowest priced items by weight. One of the things the individuals who support the area are there for, alongside approving alcohol. It still seems in it's infancy here though - Tesco had been doing that scan as you go thing for years - probably due to the massive scale of everything, just like trying to roll out contactless Debit and Credit Cards. I hated the prospect of those when they came out in the UK after chip and pin, but miss it now, especially at the pub.
