Yes, this is a big complaint of mine too around where I live. Once you get outside the town or city centre the street signs start disappearing. In fact, the problem seems to get even worse the "nicer" the area is.

Lucky I have GPS because otherwise I'd never find my way.

Phone up the county council and tell them where a sign is missing, and they'll replace it; in fact I did that just a couple of months ago for the sign at the corner of my cul de sac, where both signs were missing.

It is clear that the road and street sign maintenance is not a proactive process, but I have had a lot of success over the years in telling the state road maintenance office about pot holes in my neighborhood and getting them repaired within a day or two. A pot hole had broken through the asphalt a few months ago and was spewing gravel, and the state very quickly sent a crew to repair it. At the same time (our subdivision is a mish-mash when it comes to road maintenance responsibilities), I jumped up and down until the council came and filled a small wash-out sink hole with concrete, where the whole in the asphalt was only a foot or so long, but underneath there was a 2'x4' hole that was 2' deep, it was remarkable that the garbage truck hadn't caved it in! A few years ago another hole that had collapsed downwards was filled and capped too - though I am keeping an eye on it as it slowly subsides, and I'll be ready to report it when it needs repair again.

Hmm, interesting idea! I have to admit I'd not thought to do that.

I guess I should try to at least ring someone up about the missing signs around my own block. I'm getting tired of directing people to my house by saying, "Go down the hill and at the bottom make a right just past the tall white picket fence dead in front of you."

Where I live, you say: Go north on 34th street, till you get to 22nd Avenue. Then take the second left, 4th right, 3rd left. 3805 27th Ave will be on the left half way down the block. Who needs signposts;)

Round my way, all the street signs are intact. Luckily, we seem to be reasonably pikey free ...

Our street sign disappeared a while back and we had to tell people to go along xxx road for 4km and then turn right where the keep left sign is. Confused a few people. :D

We sill have a few phone boxes, but they are rapidly reducing in number. Pubs are much less in evidence these days - being converted into flats and offices or just knocked down :-(

We did a project on cluster theory in sixth form, based on the number of pubs in my hometown, population 15000.....there were 27:ohmy: I guess they could have lost a few without missing them, but, bucking the trend, there are actually 2 extra wine bars now, and a new "estate" pub. Mind you the population has exploded to over 18000 now:D

Turns out, until recently, the town I live next to held the title of having the most pubs per capita in England with 5 pubs for 900 people. One of them is an Indian restaurant now. It is also the smallest town in England and it had an epidemic of witchcraft in 1644.

I really can't abide passive aggressive behaviour on the internet.

Also, people who don't get irony. You know who you are ...
