One of our local stations reported the other night that a local road 99E was closed, due to a water main burst, northbound in both directions.

When I started teaching I realised part of being understood was the need to moderate my accent, whereas these days it seems a matter of pride if you can speak with a regional accent so thick that only 50% of the audience can figure out what the heck you're talking about.

Maybe the English think it's impolite to tell the server how they want things paced as far as their meal goes? I go out with a friend a lot and (depending on our mood) we'll let the server know how it's going to go down and I believe they appreciate it.
"We're going to have few drinks before we order."
or
"We'll have an appetizer while we're deciding what we want."
or
"Do you mind clearing these plates? But we're not ready for the check yet."

I almost dropped my teeth last Friday. We had gone to Cracker Barrel, so DH could get a fish and chips fix. Usually, the service is pretty good there, but our waitress that night was in a rush with an obvious mental checklist of okay, I've brought the drinks, the food, given them the check (right after she put down the food), good, they're off my to do list. What we had gotten used to there, was someone checking back to at least see if we wanted any more water or coffee etc. Plus as a former waitress myself, if you want a good tip, at least offer to check on or get them dessert. DH not amused and said well you're not going to tip her are you? When it comes to service standard, he's certainly become Americanized,
