Fish!

Alright all you Brits what is your favorite fish (or seafood), and how do you like it prepared,
All things being equal I will ALWAYS take a nice fresh Halibut steak broiled, then add a little melted butter and a bit of lemon.

Re: Fish!

For "fish & chips" it has to be haddock, deep fried. I'll eat cod, because that's usually what's on offer in the US, but it's not a patch on haddock.

Otherwise, I like calamari (fried), mussels (steamed), and salmon (broiled).

Raw. I'm a sushi fiend. My local sushi-house is fantastic and I can't get enough saba (mackerel) or Hotate (Scallop)

Otherwise I love a good Maine lobster roll. That is the only thing I miss about living in the NE. I don't like having to faff about having to break apart a whole lobster.

This is the correct answer.

(apart from sneaking the word 'broiled' in there...for shame)

Hubby dubs loves saba too, although he generally orders it as sashimi.

I don't "get" sushi. I got some once, it was unappealing, and I won't be getting any more. Mrs P ordered some as an appetizer to share earlier this year; it wasn't any better. :(

Re: Fish!

It isn't so much the fish, as the freshness.

Old/farm-raised/frozen or super-chilled fish (ie about everything you get in a supermarket or too far from the sea) is rubbery and tasteless.

Something that was pulled out of the water only a few hours earlier is sublime.

Having said that - Broiled Dover sole with lemon. Fresh, of course.

Stop that. :frown:

Raw fish is what you eat when your plane crashes and your only friend is a basketball.

And even then, it's a poor choice.

There is a reason we invented frying.

You've probably never had really good, proper sushi or sashimi then. I've never been to Japan, but when we worked in that London we'd often go to some of the sushi places in Soho that you knew couldn't be too bad as Japanese people would eat there.

I agree that most sushi is a pale imitation of the real deal, and I dare say that the same applies to my fave Soho places (mmm, Ten Ten Tei) compared to a good place in Japan, but once you get a taste for it, even mediocre sushi is something I crave now and again.

The "problem" I have is that I will eat more or less anything that purports to be food, but some things I find less pleasant, and so choose to avoid. Raw fish is one of those things, as is raw steak, which I had once, and it wasn't bad, per se, but it wasn't in my top 100 things to eat again. Thai food is another - I like curry, I like Chinese, I like (some) soup, I just don't want all three in a bowl together!

Re: Fish!

I like pretty much any fish, but going to buck the trend and put my marker down on cod for fish n chips! Haddock a very distant second, and "rock salmon" or whatever it was called darn sarf is an affront to the tastebuds!

Most regular ones I buy for cooking at home are salmon (for grilling, baking, cedar planking - kids go a bundle on it whichever way it arrives) and very occasionally cod for a pie. I've never seen fresh haddock here I don't think, though do get smoked now and then. Opening myself up for even more scorn and ridicule, I buy catfish and tilapia now and then too, normally when the fish guy tips me the wink that they've got some nice ones in. Not keen on the cornmeal stuff they fry it in here, but with a bit of blackened seasoning, or just fried with garlic it comes up lovely. I also get some whole fish at the chinese market that are lovely steamed with soy, garlic and some spring onions. No idea what they are - its all in foreign:lol:

Sushi/sashimi - love it, but only the "normal" stuff - once you start getting into the sea urchins, clams and squid I'm outta there! Kids love it too, so when we were in Japan over the summer we ate it pretty much every day. Went to a sushi train restaurant one night and had to use dynamite to get them out! Sadly there are a limited number of places that do it nicely here.

Shellfish - Shrimp I love and eat too often for my cholesterol levels, I like crab, but don't often eat it, and never cook it. Lobster I can eat, but not really keen, but other shellfish make me gag - oysters, clams, cockles etc look like they belong up a nose or in a petri dish on CSI.

That sucks.

Just realized you used the "T" word (Tilapia) earlier. Disgusting, nasty, no texture non-fish. Cod is nice though, but not as nice as a good piece of haddock (fried or smoked).

Catfish tastes of whatever grubby backwater you pull it out of.

Catfish really depends on the prep. Its certainly not my favorite, - like I said, its a "now and then" purchase, but it is perfectly acceptable if cooked properly. Son caught one a while back on a fishing trip and it was in the pan with some garlic, cilantro and chili within about 10 minutes of its last breath and it went great between two hunks of fresh bread. He pulled a couple of flounder out last weekend, and reckoned they were tasty too, though sadly I wasn't there so had to make do with pictures...:( Haven't had a flounder in many years....

Depends.
If your criteria is whether its gonna try to chase you down the street, then you're probably safe!
But given that our fish tastes are pretty close to diametrically opposite on most things, then maybe best leave it alone...

It's unremarkable, innocuous, and somewhat similar to plaice, but not as good IMO.

Flounder is one of the most usual (along with "scrod" which I understand is young cod) fishes to be served as fish and chips in New England. It's pretty good IMO although I have to agree with Pulaski that haddock is the best for fish and chips.

And don't get me started on the US's general failure to make proper chips ever.

I wonder if flounder differs by location - I always categorized it with plaice in the UK and I really don't like plaice, but in New England it seems less "flat" and more like cod to me.

Fish choice would be skate or plaice. As for shellfish, pretty much anything goes (apart from whelks).

Are you my hubby in disguise Yorkieabroad? He once told someone at the next table to us in a restaurant that all shellfish was wrong, using both your bogey and petri dish analogy!

The only time I've had tilapia that I liked was from a Japanese katsu place around the corner from where I used to work in midtown NYC. They used to do it in breaded chunks as part of a bento. Sadly they refurbished and their new bento selection isn't a patch on what it was (and I don't work near them anymore anyway).

"Flounder" is a name applied to several only vaguely related fish species. I believe(d) that they are all flat fish, though I'm not sure how old they are when the eye flips over and they become "flat", so it is possible that small ones might still look like a "regular" fish

Which brings up the next question....fish eyes - yes/no/never tried.....?

Been there once, never again. FiL loves them. Weirdo.
