Not a Brit but we used to catch fresh water rock, small mouth, and large mount bass and white crappie as a kid and I liked those more than any ocean fish or the bigger fresh water fish.

I miss the vacuum packed smoked haddock that they had in the supermarkets in the UK. Not sure if it was artificially flavored but it was artificially colored a bright yellow. Never seen it over here. I liked that with a bit of butter (salted of course) when i was in the UK.

Since being in the USA I have completely gone off salmon and gained a liking for rainbow trout which i will smoke in my smoker at home. I'll eat that with a bit of butter or break it up into bits for a salad.

When grilling a steak on the BBQ i will throw on a handful of little neck clams, not a fish i know but shellfish. Those little buggers are expensive now at $10 a lb, they used to be $5 a few years ago. Plus you might get a few open ones (dead ones). I might make a garlic white wine sauce to toss them in as well.

Also i like shrimp, tuna and anchovies on my pizza. A pizza that i discovered at an Italian restaurant in the UK.

I don't think I've seen canned pilchards over here, used to have them all the time on toast in the UK.

Other than knowing they should be clear, bright and shiny otherwise the fish ain't fresh.

I miss smoked haddock too, used to put it in my fish pie with salmon and prawns. I did get smoked trout at Trader Joes but it's not really 'chunky' enough and did find smoked haddock at Central Market once. Don't have a smoker sadly :(

Re: Fish!

Grew up on the IOW and one of my fondest childhood memories was waiting for my dad to come home on a Saturday after he spent the day fishing with his mates. He would always return with fresh mackerel that he had caught that afternoon.

He would prepare it for tea, grilled with salt and pepper and some nice warm crusty bread. Still to this day one of my favourite things to eat especially when I go to visit my parents.

You can get that round this way - I still do from time to time - lovely with a proper slice or two of brown bread and butter.

However, anchovies....
Still not sure why I love ceasar salad, cos they are in the dressing....

Re: Fish!

Haddock. Prepared by someone else. Or, in more detail - beer battered, deep fried (in lard) and put in a paper wrapper with nice chunky chips, again fried in lard, then covered in lashings of salt and malt vinegar. I will also accept the American 'fish fry' version, using cod or perch as well. I still haven't made my mind up regarding catfish. My wife has made it a few times and I've eaten it quietly but I really don't think I like it much at all

Failing that, I am partial to a nice salmon steak. I also don't mind sushi, or at least the versions that use tuna or salmon. Haven't ventured too far from that.

Also, kippers, smoked mackerel. Sardines in a tin, or tinned mackerel with mustard sauce. Mmmmmm.

Re: Fish!

Dover Sole, with a bit of lemon.

Cod for fish and chips, ideally the localish fresh stuff, otherwise haddock as it seems to freeze better.

Maine cold water lobster, boiled and eaten with butter. Crabs aren't bad either.

Calamari, fried, with a spicy dip.

Baby scallops, lightly fried in butter.

A nice bit of grilled trout is lovely too, but I don't seem to find it all that available locally, fresh that is and when I do, it's usually like the cod, massively expensive.

Maine, cold water shrimp, they make the best rolls.

When we lived in Maine, Duck Trap, fish place did some and it was yum.

They have stuff sold in Wholefoods down my way, but it's massively more expensive :(

Oh and those bags of claims, up in Maine, they're about a buck and some odd change for a pound bag off the coast, same bag is about $8 down my way.

That takes me back....when I first started working in London back in the early 80's I would go out for dinner with Dad when he came to town - we always either went to Roules (if it was my turn to choose) or the Savoy (if it was his turn). Standard order at the Savoy was Dover Sole for both of us. Still makes my mouth water to think of it....haven't had one for donkeys...

Sausage looks good, and the chips look like proper fish shop chips, but is that the "fish bits" rather than a full fillet? Looks a lot closer to the real thing than most of the stuff we get around here. Its getting me in the mood - 11.30 (UK) Saturday 25th I'll be sitting down to the real deal from Priory Fish shop in Guisborough.....can't wait!

Re: Fish!

If its fried and served with chips then its got to be haddock.

Otherwise I like salmon, walleye, rockfish, yellow perch served with lashings of butter. Tuna is good once in a while too.
I make a good dish with little neck/manilla clams, which yes look like snots before they are cooked but taste delicious when steamed with some white wine. Same applies to mussels.
Shrimp are good but not so keen on lobster. I cannot stomach raw oysters, nasty ass taste and the feeling of a mouthful of snot to boot *blech*

There is a lot of bad sushi about so unfortunately lots of people have a bad first experience. You need to find one that Japanese eat at. Skip anything with a conveyor or the words "all you can eat" or that plays loud music or has rolls with beef in them.

I was a bit disappointed with the haddock, it was very dry. I think I'll go back to the cod which is a single fillet. The chips were spot on though as was the sausage. That was an expensive lunch $7.50 for the haddock, $3.50 for chips and $3.50 for the sausage.

I worked for a Japanese company and they said not to eat too much sushi since you can get very sick. Their assumption is that it is the quantity that makes you sick but in my opinion, the more you eat creates a greater chance of getting a bad piece.

I wonder how many of you know exactly what scampi is? Not American shrimp scampi but the scampi they sell in the UK? typically it was the most expensive item on the chip shop menu when i was a kid.

I was chatting to the British chip shop owner here and asked if he had scampi and he said no. Like me he could remember it being sold in chip shops but had no idea what it actually was, so i had to bing it.

Nephrops norvegicus, who would have known

I always knew it as deep fried prawns, but never knew the variety.

I'd kill for some scampi and chips right now.

Yep the codfather, the only decent place I've found here and if were closer to my work I would be in serious trouble :)
There are cheap fish fries that try to pass themselves off as British fish and chips but the codfather is the real deal. Although some of the pies and pasties are a bit dodgy.

Having said that, "Wasabi", in our local mall is surprisingly decent, but they don't have that much on the belt so it's a bit slow at times.

But yes, it's usually a good idea to avoid.

Quite a lot of decent places locally though, which probably helps keep the quality up.

I pay $9.99 a lb for little neck clams here then go on vacation to North Carolina and my brothers friend goes out on his boat and picks them up for free.

The cheapest way to get fish here is to fish for it yourself. The rec centers have man made lakes that they stock with fish, trout i think. You only pay something silly like $5 a year to be able to fish. Trouble is i can't fish to save my life. i spent an hour at a lake with the kids and caught absolutely bugger all and came back with all the line tangled around the reels :o

Kulu Kulu on Brewer Street in Soho was/is a kaiten (conveyor-belt) place that did good sushi, and it did often have Japanese people eating there, so it's not *always* a bad sign.

I wonder if their thinking was to do with the amount of mercury that's present in fish/sea-food these days. I understand some doctors now recommend that pregnant women should severely limit the amount of fish they eat for that reason.

Right, that's probably the exception. If there are enough Japanese people eating there to keep it fresh.

My favorite place is where all the Japanese baseball players go when the cactus league is in town (so I have to avoid it in April). They take their pictures with the owner who frames them on the wall. For some reason there is also a picture of the owner with Robert Wagner. Being on first name terms with the chefs helps, you get the proper wasabi sometimes.

I've been eating alot of UK style prawn cocktails here. Typically it was a starter for a Christmas dinner in the UK or another rare occasions like a steak meal.

I have not found any prawn cocktail sauce so i make my own. I mix half mayo half tomato ketchup, lemon juice, worcestershire sauce & salt & pepper (optional : horseradish and Tabasco). Some popcorn shrimp, lettuce (not iceburg) and chopped tomato and cucumber and you've got a good old English prawn cocktail

That red shrimp cocktail sauce that they sell in the middle of shrimp ring over here just needs to be thrown straight in the bin IMO
