Can you think of one? I can't.

Archos was a popular early device that predates the ipod. There were dozens of others all boasting much larger capacity than the ipod. But you've already missed the main part of my post so I couldn't be bothered any more.

Archos was shit. Honestly, are you really saying their were better portable mp3 players available before the iPod? I can't believe anyone could asset such a statement.

Also, being popular does not equal being good. The Vauxhall Astra is popular, despite being bland beyond reason.

BTW - The iTunes store came years after the iPod

Itunes 1.0 - Jan 2001
ipod - Oct 2001

The device was mediocre the database backend was the key.

Wrong. Again. The ipod was light years of anything previous, just as the iPhone would be 6 years later. Both devices set a new benchmark in user experience.

The iTunes music store opened on 28/4/2003. Like I said, 'years'.

Dad has installed the holder in the cupboard under the stairs, so stores away ok for them too.

So she has arthritis, and the house doesn't get dirty, but she still does a 'whip round' every day! She sounds like my old Gran ... folks from that era were obsessed with cleanliness in a totally illogical way. Do they iron bedsheets, underwear, etc also?

Come to think of it, my Gran also maintained a 'front room' in their terraced house - had the best furniture in the house, and we never went in there. I think it was reserved for if the local vicar or priest or whatever came by for a spot of tea!

I see a few dust-bunnies running around the hardwood floors in my apartment at the moment, so time to break out the vacuum cleaner for its monthly (?) bit of exercise! :)

used to before the arthritis made her a bit more pragmatic.

I don't think the cleaning obsession is totally illogical though - there were two main drivers.

1. my parents were born and grew up before the NHS was formed and before antibiotics became widespread. Keeping things clean was your primary defence against illness.
2. my grandparents grew up in the 'slum' areas of Manchester, where you may not have had any money, but you were judged by all your neighbours on how clean a house you kept, whether you whitestoned your front doorstep every week etc, and that attitude was passed down through the generations. So a matter of deep pride for my mum that you would never find a spider's web daring to lurk in the corner of her ceiling.

Domestic appliances are becoming more sophisticated these days, we want to make sure we spend our money on a useful, reliable and value for money product.

Rather than leave it up to the girlies to go it alone and choose based on colour and or looks. ;) :scarper:

Yes but iPods come at several times the cost of other mp3 players.
And they don't even have a graphic equalizer.

Im wondering if they are any good? I have an old regular style Dyson upright and its a faff to take apart and use the hose attachments to do the stairs. I wondered if the handheld was any better?

I had one of the first Dyson cleaners when we lived in the UK...it was brilliant. In 1996 I couldn't buy anything close to it here.

I have tried several cordless cleaners and all fail miserably on power and battery life. I have just ordered a cordless Dyson from Costco...if I have any problems with it in the next 3 years I will get a refund. Can't beat Costco's refund policy.

Still not remotely a patch on the iPod.

That's my Gran! Terraced house 'up north', she spent her life working on the 'looms' at the 'mill', and would whitestone that front step on her hands and knees until she simply couldn't bear it any longer. I used to visit her in the 60s. She had pictures of the Pope all over the place, and of course the Queen. She'd stand when the national anthem came on TV at the end of the broadcast, despite her bad knees. I think she ironed sheets, underwear, and handkerchiefs! I used to love playing in her storage cabinet in the kitchen - she had cans and boxes of stuff to last a few lifetimes, based on living through two wars and a depression.

For sound quality, yes, it was better and as easy to use. Also about a third of the cost.

Where it fell down, it didn't have a easy to use music store to buy legit music but then again, most folks back then were using Napster and just drag and dropped tunes straight onto it, which you couldn't do on the iPods.

I do. I had one of the first Dysons when we lived in the UK...it was heavy but brilliant.

I've had several cordless cleaners and they have all been useless. The suction has been crap and the batteries don't charge too well after a few months. Ask me again in a year when I've had chance to try the battery life out...but the suction is excellent. If it fails to please in the next few years...off it goes back to Costco for a refund.
