The Caribbean doesn't have Miele available? Man, that would suck (literally). I know here in the US Miele charges a huge premium, that makes their UK prices look reasonable, but they are worth it for a lot of their goods.

Fridges, tumble dryers etc, I never see the value in paying their prices for. But washing machines, vacuum's, oven's etc, I definitely do.

Im going to live in my miele washing machine if im in london when america starts world war 3. Absolutely indestructable, but in the caribbean it has effectively a zero warranty. There i have a whirlpool us machine that actually lives outside under a carport, but seems to be happy enough 6 years down the line.

Re: Dysons

when i empty the Dyson - i hold it over the trash or inside a bag and dont have a big issue. When i had the Miele in the uk - i had to take the collector bag out of the machine - with only a small card tab to cover the open hole - so that wasnt sealed tight and dust could still escape.

so that isnt an issue for me between the two.

I never got particularly good results with the Miele - it was adequate but never awesome. Like Mr P says - i can see the crud being picked up by the dyson (when i even think the carpets are clean already) and it does a a great job.

They're in the base, with the motor...it's the way they force the air that's quite smart, doesn't have the same turbulence of a regular fan, so stuff doesn't get blown off your desk.

Its seems to be horses for courses. Dysons somehow seem better for people with pets, half their models are named "animal". They also seem to be easier to navigate around corners etc.
I have an upright canister with a HEPA filter thats stocked in most stores. Its not so good around corners but i vacuum large areas of carpets basically in straight lines. The best feature i like about it is that is self propelled and at different speeds, so i literally set it on high and throw it around or set it slow and the brush low and suck out all that fine grey dust out of the carpet. Its been going on for years and has only needed a couple of duct tape repairs to the power cable which we run over occasionally.

Also my upright has a headlight at the front so i can vacum in the dark if like :confused:

Anyhow.. Love our Dyson. It was a bit pricey, but we are using it to gradually construct an additional Bulldog from all the bits of our existing Bulldog that it picks up from the carpets, and Bulldogs 'aint cheap either so it could end up being a bargain. :D

Our Dyson IS heavy, but its been running great since the day we got it 8(?) years ago. No complaints at all, which is rare from me.. :lol:

Hopefully you have not been neglecting your Dyson? They can have internal filters to clean too :)

Air filters for the motor, not for the suction ability though....and it's only a rinse every six months in cold water, for my Dyson at least and after more than 10 years, it's not been a problem.

I don't buy that for a moment. Those who think their Dyson is better at anything than Miele or Sebo are simply kidding themselves. It's like trying to convince yourself your expensive Windows Phone is as good as an iPhone. There is simply no comparison between the two brands. One has a rich history of manufacturing best of breed products, used for generations. The other is a design company with a great marketing team, yet very little decent product.

Dyson do make a good restroom hand dryer. you put your hands in through a blade of air. I couldn't get the kids off it.

I thought I liked it, then realised it doesn't dry my hands anywhere near as well as James Dyson says it will. As I say, style over substance.

Or dry them at all in my experience.

Re: Dysons

I found the hand dryers aren't to bad...but you've got to slowly draw your hand through, which is annoying.

The newer design seems to be a lot more effective. Still, the regular ones are on par with most hand driers, which is to say, they're crap when you're in a hurry and kids never seem to be able to reach down into them, they really need to be installed at an angle.

Im wondering if they are any good? I have an old regular style Dyson upright and its a faff to take apart and use the hose attachments to do the stairs. I wondered if the handheld was any better?

Two questions.

1. What is a "Dyson"?
2. What is a Hoover?

Exactly. Dyson is one big marketing con. It also irritates me when people compare Dyson to Apple; Apple makes products that are best in class. The same can not remotely be said of the junk Dyson manufactures.

The iPhone was a world changing device. So was the iPod. So was the Mac. Apple - at least for the last decade - make quality products that are class leading. The same can't be said of Dyson.

Apple is a niche product manufacturer. I would contend that the maker of "game changing" products was Microsoft, and Google-Android that has a greater market share of the smart phone market than Apple ever will. Of course Apple was so excelling in their "best of class" computers that they abandoned their own proprietary architecture and their computers now run on the same Intel chips that windows machines run on, and have for decades! :rolleyes:

Apple certainly got alot of mileage out of their solid state off board memory drive, otherwise known as an iPod. ..... Now, what were you saying about the triumph of marketing over substance? :sneaky:

Actually the ipod was kind of mediocre compared to the other mp3 players of the time. What was actually world changing was the seamless integration with the back end database through itunes which allowed people to buy music and put it on their device without any real hassle.

Re: Dysons

I just found this thread, and it made wonderful reading for a quiet Sunday morning, but I do think it raised more questions than it answered, such as:-
- why is Guindalf complaining about the sport of taking huge dumps in threads, yet appears to be doing it himself; and which model does he actually have;
- how does Ms Elui know that she can suck more through a straw, and more importantly, what does she do with it afterwards…spit, or swallow?;
- what on earth has bob-grenada been using his on to get “girlie hair” wrapped round his brush?;
- why is such a simple act as positioning the canister over a bin and pressing a button so troublesome to HH? Surely he could hire an illegal alien to do it for him if its that bothersome.
- Can someone please explain the a380 / 747 comparison?
- How can a company like Miele be so honest in their marketing, while anything Dyson says is total bollox?
- Why is everyone ignoring the very pertinent question posed by Nutek in post #44?
- Why are people hung up on the dyson hand dryer, when everyone knows that the xcellerator is by far the most effective hand dryer out there. Not only that, but it comes with a handy built in fat content monitor, which none of the others do.
- Why are 8 of the top ten posters on a thread about girlie domestic appliances blokes?

All right, all right, calm down……I’ve got a Dyson too, had it about a year and I suspect the missus doesn’t even know yet. She’s certainly never used it, and probably doesn’t even know where I keep it! Not sure what it is – one of those uprights with a ball. Its OK – easy to use and empty, suction is OK, not very good on the carpet beating thing, but it does have a nice long cable. Doesn’t feel very robust – a bit plasticky to be honest, but will see how it goes.

There was not an MP3 player that came close to the iPod at the time (and indeed for years after). Creative were the leader then, and their products were junk.

Can you think of one? I can't.
