Cooking and supermarkets - help !!!

Re: Cooking and supermarkets - help !!!
no idea! but it explained why some of the recipes i had followed since being here have variable results - if i used the wrong jug i could be ounces out!
This site http://www.recipes4us.co.uk/liquid%2...on%20chart.htm implies that the uk measure is the true 'imperial' one but doesnt say anything other than 'us pints' for the us version - like its an oddity. (Mind you its a .co.uk site !)

Both the Imperial and US pints are defined as an eighth of a gallon. The US pint is based on the US gallon, which is defined to be British wine gallon of 1707, to wit: exactly 231 cubic inches (3 in x 7 in x 11 in). However in 1824, Parliament replaced the various definitions of a gallon prevalent in different industries with the Imperial Gallon, defined as the volume of 10 pounds of distilled water at 62 degrees Fahrenheit (277.42 cubic inches).

Re: Cooking and supermarkets - help !!!
By the way, I baked my first loaf of bread the other day. I feel quite accomplished.
Of course I did it in a bread maker which was kind of cheating, but hey, I'm learning.
