Re: BHS and now Austin Reed collapse
Well at the end of the day, paying more for good service is a luxury for those with cash to burn.
In the US and Canada its more the middle class retailers struggling.
High end and low end seem to be doing okay.
Its the middle class retailers like Sears who no longer have much customer base. Too pricey for low income, too cheap and no good brands for the wealthy.
The middle class is dying a slow death.

As for BHS, I'm surprised it lasted this long. Even back in the '80's it felt awfully dated and on its last legs.

I was sorry when Robinson-May disappeared. I bought a lot clobber there over the years. Their clothing was better quality than Sears but their prices cheaper then Nordstrom

There was a good period from the mid eighties, when there was Storehouse Plc. BHS was a sort of mass market Habitat, with really nicely designed homewares and such at popular prices. I don't know why they lost their way after that, but Mothercare (under the same ownership) apparently also went downhill in the 90s (probably because we'd moved to America, those two shops were where we bought a lot of our stuff.)

My sister used to be a Saturday girl at BHS in the food hall part. Used to come home with all manner of goodies as they wouldn't last until Monday (no Sunday trading then!).

Another chain went into administration today, My Local , was part of Morrisons I believe. The retail environment in the UK is probably so different these days in the UK

Re: BHS and now Austin Reed collapse
It was bought by ASDA in 2010 who couldn't make it work. They then offloaded it off to Sainsbury's who now want to focus more on the Argos side I guess.

There was a several year gap 2010-2014, I think, so it looks to me like the Sainsbury's JV was a reboot, not a purchase of the pre-existing chain.
