Default BHS and now Austin Reed collapse

The UK just won't ever be the same as it was when I left 8 years ago. Woolworths, Comet went years ago, and now BHS and Austin Reed are set to disappear from the high street. I think the last 10 years has seen the most change in big retailers in about 100 years.

Default Re: BHS and now Austin Reed collapse

I wondered how BHS survived and that was before I left.

They did have some pasties I liked but that was about it.

Many others have gone bust and disappeared, and many more are barely hanging on.

C&A has gone, as has Our Price, Whittards, Pier One, Jessops, Tie Rack, and Sock Shop. As have Athena, La Senza, and MFI.

Lewis's department store went 25 years ago, so it's hardly a new phenomenon.

C&A shops are in most larger towns in mainland Europe.....there are two of them within 15 minutes of where I'm currently living (Zug, central Switzerland).

I wouldn't be surprised if WH Smiths goes to the wall in the near future....they are always busy at their airport locations but some of their shops in towns are shabby, untidy and poorly stocked...and it's a pain trying navigate around their shops when there are long queues for the Post Office inside some of the WH Smith stores 😕

I used to love Woolies.

Where else could you get Pick-n-Mix and a Top of the Pops Hot Hits 16 Cassette all in one place?

I was surprised that BHS survived this long.

MFI? Wow, haven't thought of those guys in years. Whereas you might have a screw missing with IKEA, the question with MFI was how many? 😂

Or how many screws went right through the whole item of furniture and how long before it collapsed.
