Oh and the same for Wagon for Estate car, makes me think of horse and cart.

Yet no problem with Sedan for Saloon car.
The pic in this Wikipedia article say it all.

I will admit that, as an American, "saloon" has a weird sound to it. I guess it would be similar to an Englishman driving a "pub." I remember my grandfather's Buick Roadmaster "Estate." So "Estate Car" doesn't bother me.

The technology of the railroad developed in parallel in the UK and the US. The US has "conductors" while the UK has "guards."

Spackling for Putty...it just makes me cringe and sounds really rude, or am I the only one?
Spackling is perfectly healthy and nothing to be ashamed of.

I bet you wouldn't want to be referred to as a 'spackler' though.

Not IRL, but hiding behind an online nom de plume I can live with it.

Robin was described as the soubriquet of Batman's assistant.

Just a word I don't often get a chance to use.

In keeping with the thread topic, one wonders if when using an Americanism in a post, one should also put that in Italics?

Thanks for this - it led me to look at the Wikipedia article for soubriquet, which I then decided to edit.

Did you make it funny? I love funny Wikipedia edits. There was once one for the Lisburn Road in Belfast that made me piss myself. I'm so glad I had the foresight to copy and paste it to a Word doc before some spoilsport fixed it

A phrase that I had never heard before is being used by the local kids: "look it", meaning "look at this/that". Could just be a northwest thing. Grammar is wrong!

This is an old dialect usage; people here (rural New York) use it all the time.. mostly old people, but younger folks too.
