Birthright citizenship seems to have suddenly become a big topic this week.

Scares me a little.

Most scholars agree it would need a constitutional amendment to change the current situation, though there are one or two who say a simple bill could fix it. I don't see how it could possibly be policed or enforced. Would it be up to doctors and nurses to check the legal status of the parents before admitting them?

You could quite easily get Godwined into a slippery slope argument too. Well, you were here legally on holiday when you gave birth but..., the mother is a USC but the father only has a green card..., well the parents didn't take the naturalization oath until after the birth so...

Preventing them from accessing the hospital is not going to stop them giving birth on US soil - in fact it might make it literally the case!

Has "The Donald" officially changed "The Hair" from gold to silver? He's suddenly sporting a silver-gray look, instead of the yellow-gold look of old. Maybe he changes it for the crowd ... gold when he is courting the ladies, silver when he's trying to appear serious on CNN ...

(I don't normally pay attention to the looks of a candidate but 'The Donald' is special!)

Seems to be as well qualified as the other candidates.

It looked a more muted gold colour with a little grey at the sides to me. In the past he has said his wife cuts and styles his hair. I wonder how bald he is under that huge comb over.

You know things are not going too well when this is your defence.

“The question shouldn’t be, do you trust Hillary Clinton,” Pfeiffer said. “It needs to be, do you trust Hillary Clinton more than Marco Rubio or Donald Trump on the economy, immigration” and more.

Yes indeed, and you also know that Jeb Bush is in trouble when he enlists the help of his persona non grata, brother George W, for help.

It would definitely require a constitutional amendment, Congress has used US v. Wong Kim Ark as the guiding principle since 1898, so immigration and naturalization law is based around that. They'd have to revise all kinds of territorial laws, treaties with Indian tribes, possibly the Indian Citizenship Act:

BE IT ENACTED by the Senate and house of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That all non citizen Indians born within the territorial limits of the United States be, and they are hereby, declared to be citizens of the United States: Provided That the granting of such citizenship shall not in any manner impair or otherwise affect the right of any Indian to tribal or other property. (Approved June 2, 1924
So if jus soli didn't apply to their children there would then be a very complicated procedure to figure out whether their parents were a bona fide Indian and there have already been major problems with getting Indians birth certificates, so imagine trying to trace a blood line.

That any person who is born in Porto Rico of an alien parent and is permanently residing in that island may, if of full age, within six months of the taking effect of this Act, or if a minor, upon reaching his majority or within one year thereafter, make a sworn declaration of allegiance to the United States before the United States District Court for Porto Rico, setting forth therein all the facts connected with his or her birth and residence in Porto Rico and accompanying due proof thereof, and from and after the making of such declaration shall be considered to be a citizen of the United States
His or her birth.

This is a can of worms no-one in their right mind will want to open.

What I find rather worrying is the number of Republican candidates who agreed with this idiot.

Well yes. It's interesting that everyone seems to agree Trump won't be the real nominee come crunch time. Ok fine. Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of strategists sitting around saying "Hey Trump said X and he seems to be polling well after saying it, I think our candidate should say X too". This appears to be Scott Walker's current game.

A race to the bottom ensues.
