Lots of unusual contacts back then such as polar expeditions and one which was like a touch of the Tony Hancocks when I picked up a guy stranded on his yacht in the Indian ocean.
Turned out his family only lived a few miles from me so I passed on the word to his mother that he was ok and he sent me a thank you card from Thailand a week or two later.
I used to chat regular with US Jumbo pilots mainly crossing the Atlantic with little else to do when on auto pilot.
They used to give me more accurate weather forecasts than the met office.

I still have my log book from way back then when I made quite a lot of friends worldwide and was eventually fortunate enough to visit a few of them.

Todays hi-tec communications have taken a bit of the shine off it now, but it was wonderful, even like magic back then, to be able chat with folk on the other side of the globe by means of a homemade antenna and occasionally a homemade rig.

well its a pretty good hobby to have in all this heat as you don't have to work to hard physically, most of its mental stress and strain

have recently come across my old swl log, going back to late 60's when all I had was a little rx - racking brains as typing and can't remember what it was. eventually upgraded for a Trio 9R-DS, very good for cw, made all my own longwires. its still in the loft of the house the OH now owns..:(

I started getting disillusioned back in the mid 70's when all the Japanese prebuilt stuff was flooding the country. Did the exhib at Greycoats Leicester and a guy just put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a wad of £10's and said its for me son, give im wot e wants.! went away with a bit of kit worth 2 weeks of my navy pay :frown:

had a couple of Hancock moments, but had a greyhound under me at the time, a very nasty typhoon off HK as well.

as you say, its a good hobby, I know I would like to get back to it when I am out in the sun, take my mind off the heat .

I still have a rake of top notch rugged valve/bottle gear stashed away, so come this major geomagnetic storm hopefully I'll still be blasting away on the air giving it seven bells, while every bugger else is weeping over whats left of the burnt out ashes of their modern transistorised crap.

ISTR also proofed against emp if certain elements let off a nasty.
such a pity noone around to hear you, but you will be 5x5 with yourself

in early teens, cycled to Brookmans Park, at the time BBC Home Service station and the valves were ginormous, something like 10ft tall and wide in proportion...
found out last year OH's son's father in law was pilot for BEA and they used that place as a landmark

Well I could always have a bit crack with one of those Ruskie pilots.
Do you recall when the West got their hands on the latest state of the art Ruskie fighter and found it was fitted out with valves ?
First thoughts were that they had just emerged from the stone age and then the penny dropped.

On a side note I recently watched a documentary on Bletchley Park.
What a shame they destroyed the worlds first electronic computer, a massive valved job called Colossus which played a major part in WW2.
Thats something I would love to have seen and I would think it could have been a huge tourist attraction.
If destroying it wasn't bad enough, they then passed all the technology on to the Yanks who as might be expected promptly laid claim to inventing the first guess what.
Par for the course I suppose.

I saw a disturbing advert in a computer magazine yesterday for a tracking device the size of an old penny. What disturbed me was the wording of the advert - want to know where your wife is? I know that tracking technology has been around for years and the real stuff is the size of a pinhead, but that would cost a lot more than this thing advertised for 50 Euros.

The advert showed you how to fit the device into your wife's handbag and you would be able to track her movements 24/7, to within a metre of her actual location. I suppose if you were really on the case you could also fit a voice activated tape recorder even smaller than the size of an old penny.

I know that our intelligence agencies need such devices, and they're a lot more sophisticated than the ones advertised in a computer magazine, but I'm horrified to see them advertised openly and dread to think what the nutters of this world would use them for.

The divorce rate already stands at one in three, with stuff like this there will be no married people left in the world.

I can relate to that. I'm sure there are some nice bits in Birmingham, but I was a bit disturbed to notice where you would expect to see 'Welcome to Birmingham' it said "Abandon hope....."

I seem to recall similar devices being advertised 25 yrs and more back for much less than 50 euros, though how good they were and what their effective range was I have no idea.
I've watched cop documentaries where tracking devices are used to trace stolen cars. They appear to be a great deal more complex and expensive than a 50 euro job and even then they are not always entirely effective.

Now if er indoors is going to go astray, she's probably not worth losing sleep over anyway, but if on the other hand these devices had a built in system to block their credit cards on approach to a major shopping centre then I dare say they could be quite useful. :sneaky:

how do you not know the OH has already bought one or more to keep tabs on you...

there are so many people out there wanting to push the boundaries with regard to invasion of privacy, human rights etc etc. Remember making little pcb's with transmitter only about 1inch square, problem was the size of the microphone was larger than the tx. Only had a range of a couple hundred yards but good pickup and quality on the FM band wiith a battery portable or in car. That was in the 70's and 80's.

must have been the weather, all that heat effecting me your honour.

It is not the heat that is so much of a worry it is the sun, Oz has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world and even more should be done to make more people aware of the dangers, I burn easily even with high factor sun block and did not even wear shorts when I was working outside and always always had a wide brimmed hat to protect your face, baseball caps are a waste of time.

and people used to laugh at coolies who wore such hats, now it must be making more sense to those who have large stretches of skin cancer.

like drink, sun should be taken in moderation, savoured like (wo)men who should not be taken in moderation

So did it have all those dangly bobbledy bits hanging around it to keep off the flies ?
I often wondered if they were effective.

I don't normally have a problem with my arms or legs, but although I've worked outdoors all my life my face burns up easily.

I have on several occasions managed to get sunburned sitting just inside an apartment or on the terrace completely in the shade all day.
I can only put it down to reflected rays coming of concrete surfaces or whitewashed buildings, as naturally it doesnt happen if the surrondings are open campo.
