Now that the temperatures has gone down a couple of degrees, my brain is functioning better and I wanted to reply to the OP’s interesting post, explaining why people who may want to return are hanging on in Spain.
Supposing you have a nice four-bedroomed villa in Spain, on a 1,000 metre plot, with a large swimming pool, and you’ve lived here for something like 12 years, but you’re a bit fed up for various reasons and are considering a return to the UK.
In a cheaper area on the Costa Blanca, if you could sell, you could expect something like 200,000 Euros, the equivalent of £180,000.
So you check what is available in your chosen UK area, take the South-East, for example.
Hythe, Kent – a terraced house.
Clacton-on-Sea, Essex – a small semi-detached house
Woodbridge, Suffolk, a small flat
Brighton, Sussex, a small flat
London – a parking space.
And to top it all, the UK prices are going up again, while Spanish prices are still dropping.
That’s why people are hanging on in their four-bedroomed detached . . .

But presumibly those were people´s real impression of Spain. An impression is just that, someone´s personal take on a place. They may not agree with yours, but everyone has their different thoughts on the place, and I´m assuming what they have said is exactly what they think of the place. Not saying they are right, or you are wrong, just that people often have completely different impresions of a place. I have seen many places where zillions of Brits live in Spain, and they must have a completely different impression of the place than I do, I´d move to Outer Mongolia before living in some of them.
I have absolutely no problem about people expressing their views on their area - thats not how it usually comes accross though which is the point I have been trying to make in vain! There are sweeping generalisations made about Spain based on the sometimes limited experience you speak of. Its the sweeping generalisations that annoy me. I try to limit my comments to the areas I have visited or that I live in.
Again, I agree .... but writing a whole countries gastronomy off because you've been to some bad restaurants, or making the case that all Spaniards are rude because you dont understand their language culture is taking things a little too far

After all, if an American said to you 'is England nice' you'd probably waffle on for hours about did they mean the countryside, which part of England, the different dialects, characteristics of different regions.... all valid for England (let alone Wales/Scotland/NI)... so it's even more relevant for a country the size of Spain.

The bigger with the stick is his brother in law age 33
The on the end is Ernesto age 29, and the other is his younger brother, I dont know how old he is.....

Thinking back to those fields in Devon, the sheep only had two gigantic fields, separated by one gate, with a centuries old stone wall all around on which I used to sit and watch them, and once one field was devoid of grass, they were moved to the only other one until the first one recovered......

We have old stone walls too you know?

..........Im British, but then some of are descended from the norweigans who invaded france - hence Normandy - then William the Conquorer invaded us here in Hastings in l066 which for some strange reason they celebrate by having a bonfire and fireworks on the beach where he landed on October l4th, so i guess we are all mongrels - lol! I just happen to have the name Jaques, but it doesnt have a "c" which is different from the French Jacques!
And as for the old spanish mens photo, i just googled "pics of old spanish men" and it came up but i cant remember which site it was...............Im surprised Julio Iglasias didnt appear, (with his hairy chest and medallion)

I hate being back here. Same old people here stuck in a rut, everything is so bloody depressing here. yes theres a asda and tescos, but give me my old crappy supermarket in spain anyday.
The weather here just grinds people into a state of gloom.

I have to confess, I quite like Vejer, having been there many times, but would I want to live there, ¡ni en sueños! Already too many Brits there, kinda ruined it for me.
