Is that not what the EEC is about freedom of movement allowed to work in member state countries? Don't see a problem with that if you set up a business working for ex pats or Spanish and make it work good on you. If you apply for a job on the open market and are the best person for the job and get it good on you no matter what EEc country it is, if you are self sufficient and retire to a member country and try to intergrate without whinging about all things foreign good on you. If you plan to retire/move abroad to try and live off foreign benefits that you have never paid for and treat the local residents as inferior that's another question. How many people say get the foreigners out of Britain if they dont speak our language they shouldn't be here but would happily move to Spain/Cyprus without making any attempt to speak their language? Not easy I know I am trying and find it difficult BUT I am trying.

That's the biggest paradox/hypocrital behaviour I see with the whole situation.

It seems there is a large section of British society that wants everyone to speak English in Britain, but when they move abroad, they see no problem in speaking English all the time.

There was a furure when Muslims in Britain started sending their kids to specialist Muslim schools, but British parents have no problem sending their kids to English schools in Spain where they get taught very little about Spanish society, geography, history or culture.

I would be very surprised to meet a Spaniard who doesn't know the president's name as it means shoemaker and some of my right wing students call him that in English when we have our frequent arguments about polititics as I admire him very much. The only racism I have encountered by Spanish is against there own gypsies. A bit like the English with the "Jocks" and "Paddys". I can't remember what they call the Welsh.

1) gipsies are in many countries of the world, included United States

2) Do you speak of racism to the gipsies in Spain? There is not more racist community that the gipsies. Parasites that only they accept their customs, that don't contribute anything to the system, but that they benefit of our social system...Or is it that you don't know that in Spain the government give houses to the gipsies?

This useless government should give houses to people that has been working and paying taxes during all their life, mainly to the old people, many with pensions of misery, instead of giving those houses to the gipsies...The old people, that is the people that lifted this country with their work. I will only tell you that you don't have gipsy families living in your building, and you don't insult or attack a gipsy, because if you make it with a Spanish, the fight would be between you and the Spanish, but if you make it with a gipsy, the gipsy with all its family and its friends will look for you to give you as minimum a beating

And you speak of racism to the gipsies?

I lived in a gypsy street in Oliva for eleven years and had no problems with my neighbours but on the ocasions I did due to their children or grandchildren I went to their houses and told them my problem which they usually solved with a quick smack (not to me). My neighbours were mainly hardworking market traders and orange pickers. Unfortunately in their extensive families they had drug dealers, addicts and thieves. they defended their culture and I don't remember a single case of pregnant teenagers. When the odd one married a Spanish girl she was welcomed with open arms although in every case she was disowned by her own parents.

How does that song go again, "Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun and live in a Gypsy street".

It may have worked for you, but it is not advisable if you want to teach English, like you did, bacause I cannot imagine many Spanish families sending their children for private classes to a street inhabited by gypsies.

Call them racist or whatever, but the Spanish as a race DONT LIKE GYPSIES, and entering a gypsy "area" would not feature on their BUCKET LISTS.

Most would also be suspicious of any "payo" that went to live amongst them, they would wonder, as I do myself, why someone form a different country, with a few bob, would choose to live, in what is usually considered, the most marginalised district and community with the lowest standard of housing and living in any town.

The Brits have been here... for a couple of decades or so. The Gypsies, so say the Spanish, have been here for 400 years and still haven't integrated. I know some Gypsies and rub along with them more or less but the Spanish really don't like them at all. I'll be accused of generalisation if I list the reasons...
Perhaps the more we hate 'the other lot', the better 'our lot' - of which we are a part - appears. Which is why some people support football teams: without any effort, they can belong to what they perceive to be an elite. And as a corollary to this, ain't it great being an 'outsider'... an extranjero?

Good, if you have given with good people, I congratulate you

Of course, the gipsies don't go making massacres in the street, but it is not until they are your neighbors or interactions with them, when you see the things

My father had a gipsy friend that was very good person. But I ask to you, how many, in proportion to their population? I know about what I speak, because I have had interaction with them, even I have worked with them, and like I have said, the day that you have the bad luck of having a friction with them, you will simply remember what I am telling you. Only then you will see the difference between them and us

Barrio Pinet has some of the best houses in Oliva, best views and best climate. This is where most Brits I know bought houses, both rich and poor. Also French , German and Dutch have homes there. Many were previously owned by gypsies or by Spanish anxious to buy the new flats in the town. Most of my students were local Spaniards who also had gypsy neighbours or Brits who were learning Spanish. I was the token Brit on my district council in charge of education and culture and we had two gypsies, one a social worker, who was our secretary and a builder who was in charge of law and order. The rest were Spaniards who had successful businesses in the district and the Mother Superior of our local convent which was a village house next to Bar Pelut, the best bar in Oliva which had some gorgeous gypsy waitresses. you really ought to do your homework before you open your very big mouth.
